I have a pup who is carrying an enormous, thick, long coat. She is a lot like her mother but it has more length. The problem is the huge waves along her back. I've thinned out what I can without it looking like I've messed too much with it. It seems to have loads of volume and flops from side to side on the move which makes her look really roll poly. I've tried serums and several finishing sprays but makes no difference. I need something to weigh it down a bit and help keep it under control. Can anyone recommend any products that may help?
What breed? I wouldn't suggest putting something in the coat as that can lead to an entire section of the coat bouncing as the dog moves. Have you tried training the hair with a heat dryer on a low setting? Backbrush it with a pin brush to get the coat straight, then brush it in the direction it grows to get it to lie flat. Using a drydog coat after that can help keep the hair flat. You could also try lifting up the top guard hairs and hand-stripping out some coat from underneath. If you've been using thinning shears, that can actually make things worse as the coat never quite grows in the right direction once it's been scissored.
My golden has a wavy coat and the only way I manage to get it reasonably flat is to dry as GldensNScotties suggests, then put a drydog coat on until she is totally dry. I usually put the coat back on for her travel in.
Have to say I do love the waves even though the straighter coats are easier to prepare. :)
