just had my neighbour nearly knocking down my front door she is in such a panic, she has a bitch in season and she is 21 days in season, their son brought over his young dog and they where playing in the garden happily and she said next thing she knew the dog and bitch where tied, she said to me what can she do, i advised going to the vet and getting her injected to stop the pregnancy but i do not know much more about that so anyone have it done before, how much did it cost, did it work,i can't think of anything else to ask , just want to be able to give her some idea, she is absolutly distraught so she does not need a lecture, the bitch was going in to be spayed after this season as it is, she managed to tell me what happend through the tears and i said i would ask on here as you lot are good and i am going along to hers tonight to speak to her she feels awful .

The injection is called Alizin and it needs to be given twice. Prices will obviously vary between vets but when I had cause to use it about 3 years ago it cost around £60 for the two. It does work really well.
thankyou just off to see her now and re assure her that she is not to be worried and these things do happen she feels as though she has let her dog down

Just to add it is normally give at the end of a season, so there is no great rush as with the old injections. Get her to make sure it is Alizin the vet uses, not the old mismate injection.

It can happen to anyone. It is easy to criticise if it hasn't happened to you!
I was distraught when a Yorkie bitch of mine did exactly the same. I didn't want her to have a litter, as she had patella problems. I asked Marianne for advice on here, and made the decision to use Alizin. I actually had her injected within 24 hours, and again 2 days later. I believe that the idea of doing it at the end of a season is because the bitch could easily remate. However, my bitch had no problems at all. I went ahead with her patella operation, and she is now spayed. I've heard folk say that the jab is expensive. My answer would be that it would be far more expensive to rear the litter!
Tell your neighbour that Alizin works, and her bitch will be just fine. :-)

wow The morning after pill for dogs who new :-) lol

Pity more didn't use it, think vets or TV prorammes could do more to promote it. We have had members come on here horrified that we would encourage them to abort a litter[ can be done up to 42 days if my memory is right, not known of anyone leave it that long], they don't realise how expensive it is to raise a litter and be responsible for those pups for the next 10-15yrs, not just 8 weeks till they go home if homes can be found.
I wish the vets would publicise it more in their surgeries (along with the worming and microchip posters), some form of mis-mating injection has been around for decades.
Some years ago (14 maybe?) a neighbours bitch got caught by another neighbours dog. The bitches ownder was trying to separate them after they had tied

We managed to stop him and told him about the injection way back then. He had never heard of it. When I mention it to anyone not in the showing world I get the blank stares so can only assume that it isn't widely known about. Vets do need to publicise it more, but then they are more into neutering everything before they have a chance to mate.
my first dog nearly 30 years ago was mis-mated. Ex-oh let her out while she was in season and I came home from work to find her tied in the front drive with a dog, Although I knew nothing about dogs back then my first reaction was to call the vet and ask if there was anything I could do to stop her having puppies. She had an injection and did not go on to have a litter.
Maybe vets could do more to publicise the injection but surely one of the first steps to take if your dog got mated by mistake is to call the vet?

Absolutely; one of the side-effects of publicising these drugs is that the more irresponsible people will take even less care of their in-seson bitch, thinking that they've got a 'Get out of jail free' card, regardless of any possible longterm side-effects, the way that far too many women have multiple abortions rather than use contraception.
all done and dusted it cost her 22.00 consultation fee and 40.00 for the injection, she is happy now and she said her son is paying for it for her as it was his male but she said to me i told him half would do as she was the floosy that let him
> one of the side-effects of publicising these drugs is that the more irresponsible people will take even less care of their in-seson bitch, thinking that they've got a 'Get out of jail free' card,
surely better that than yet another litter of poorly bred pups sweling the rescue centres.
Ditto the human ellement, where one would hope the morning after pill is used more than multiple abortions. It is why it has become more easily available, and it is probably aimed at the same section of the community who are less responsible/educated about their own reproduction, are not goign to bother much about that of their pets.

Better to spay and castrate before the event rather than repeatedly treat afterwards.

At £200 to spay a medium size bitch many peopel are put off by the cost, though of course it's cheaper than repeated mismate treatment.
Surely though as neutering is not thr best for every pet the fact that something can be done in the event of missalliance should be more readily known. It does occasionaly happen in cases not due to irresponsibility (such as atypicaly long seasons).

I used Alizin last November on my girl, i left her in the lounge with the door shut aswell as a baby gate, my boy was on the other side in the hallway in the crate. I left them for around 3hrs, when i came back one side of the dogs crate was bent out and he was in the lounge, had cocked his leg everywhere and stood there smiling :(
I felt gutted and ashamed at the tme, to be honest i dont think he had her just spent the afternoon pestering but she had a litter on her previous season and i didnt want another so took her for the injection as a precaution. I have since brought a kennel and can manage the dogs better now - planning a litter for next year :)
I think i paid around £60 aswell which is nothing compared to an unwanted litter.

ETA i forgot to say my brother was horrified and told me i was being cruel giving her the injection!

If she was going to spay the bitch after the season anyway, why not just wait till she stops and then spay her? Any fertilised eggs will be removed in the process... Save her the cost of the jab.

Spaying a bitch just after a season or pregnant is not ideal, so the injection and doing it once the hormones are at their most quiescent is a far better option.
I have just had a bitch spayed 12 weeks after her litter and the vet said there was a lot more bleeding than he would normally have in a routine spay mid way between seasons.
Kept her on gentle lead exercise and everything was fine 10 days later when she had her stitches out.
>why not just wait till she stops and then spay her?
The risk of complications is far higher when the uterus is engorged and the blood supply increased, and the chances of behavioural problems (lactation for months, etc) due to the hormones being suddenly removed rather than ebbing naturally are much higher too. You'd only spay so close to a season if the bitch's life depended on it.

Like my bitch that mated on day 28 years ago, and the vet said that it was pointless injecting, as she couldn't possibly conceive on day 28!
Yeah - Right!
7 puppies.
