My 11 week old puppy is on 4 meals a day when do I put her onto 3 meals a day
- By Brainless [gb] Date 30.08.12 19:49 UTC
Shortly, usually around 12 weeks.

Mine (medium breed and hearty eater) is 14 weeks today and has been on three meals a day since about 10 weeks as she was easily gobbling up her meals and I found her more satisfied on three slightly larger ones.

Often you will find them loosing interest in one meal.

With the speed she gobbles all her meals at the minute I can't imagine her ever losing interest in any food (she's a typical lab lol)

Well when mine finish their portions and obviously could eat more in one sitting I reduce the number of meals, but obviously give the quantity in fewer sittings.

The reason for frequent meals is to not overload the digestion, and also keep energy levels in the body at a more even level by spreading the meals through the day, the reason many feed two meals in adulthood..

I'm increasing her meals very gradually but I don't actually know where to stop if that makes sence, people have said I will just know but this breed are notorious for eating for England so surly I don't wait till I think she's a bit fat before I adjust her food or do I

At this age they are growing, so unless you grossly overfeed they are unlikely to get fat before you notice, and all you do then is wait for them to grow into the fatness before increasing again.  If after a week they are not looking slimmer or even getting fatter you have reached the point where you may need to stop increasing it.

Get into a routine every week of grooming, checking teeth and cutting nails (just nip the tips of a couple each week), and checking the body condition.

Is there a weight guide on her food? I don't go above the top figure for weight, you will find with each growth spurt the hunger will increase and then settle.

With adults if  can feel their ribs without poking to hard they are fine, with pups and ones of different breeds it is hard to use the same rule but again you don't want a fat pup putting strain on their joints etc.

There is always my standby if you think they are getting enough but acting half starved add frozen sliced green beans to their kibble, they are digested slower and leave the dog feeling fuller for longer and don't contain loads of calories.

What age roughly do they stop growing and is it best to use proper dog nail clippers on her, am I doing it just to get her used to it at the min more than anything.  It's a pain trying to do anything with her cos all she wants to do is bite/ mouth and play lol

Yes, and as for the clippers it depends how big her nails are now.  My pup is a smaller breed than yours but we already us the resco guilotine clippers.

There is a guide on the bag rhodach I was just curious cos I know these can eat for ever.  I remember with my first which was years ago my mother in law tried to say I should feed my pup which was the same breed I have now,  she said just leave a bowl down let her eat when and what she wants,  I would have ended up with an extremely overweight dog cos they just don't know when to stop.
Her mum wasn't a big dog, her dad was a typical male and I'm thinking she's going to be like her mum.

This is why it's always helpful to stay in touch with the breeder of your pup, and owners of litter mates too.  Every dog is different but it's nice to get some feedback about how much each pup is eating, how many meals per day, how much the dog weighs and other news.  I'm still in touch with litter mate owners of both my wires and they are now 2 and 5 yrs old :)

If you are feeding kibble then small adjustments of 5 or 10 grammes per meal should be enough to keep your dogs weight well managed.  Just feel for ribs, keep an eye on output and tweak til you get it right.  I find that my gundogs eat ever increasing amounts up to 6 months old then it levels out for a short while before they need more again. Portions are then gradually increased right up until they reach their adult skeletal height at about 18 months at which time I need to start scaling back to maintain a good weight.  My youngest at 18 months suddenly looked like he'd eaten a cow as the weight went on almost overnight.  It didn't take long to adjust it but I found it interesting that within a few short weeks (less than 2 in fact) he stopped using the food for overall growth and just grew a tummy instead!!

I'm usually pretty good with weight but I hadn't really noticed this time as this was a boy who was always going to be a bigger dog than his uncle, who also lives with me. Usually though you will notice if you remember to look for it, and in a heavy coated breed feel for it.

To get them used to having their paws handled fiddle with them whilst they are napping by you, poke your fingers between the pads and toes then when you need to do something it doesn't come as a shock, trimming is best done when they are half asleep.

I am waiting for some new clippers, you can set how much you take off and it has a grinder too to tidy up the edges, will let you know how I get on with it. Till now I have used the guillotine type but they were getting blunt after nearly 10yrs use.

The Resco ones come with a spare blade and you can change the blades when needed so pretty much last forever.

I have used a similar one, but I didn't like not being able to see the nail I had poked through.

Only time will tell, I liked the chunky grips as my arthritis can be bad in my hands and gripping and controlling my old ones was becoming a problem.

Really annoyed as postie put card through door this morning without knocking, even if I missed hearing no way would the dachsies, didn't see card till Post Office closed to arrange redelivery, will try contacting them tomorrow, the last time they did this I was just about to go upstairs when the card appeared, he got the shock of his life when I opened the door.
