I am a 3rd generation gundog girl so this is about the only type of dog that has lived in my home with me.  I have had another breed but they lived outdoors in kennels and always smelled like it regardless of bathing and showing.  But I now have a working breed living with us in the house and I have an embarassing secret...........I love the smell!!!  I don't know what it is but I love sticking my face in her fur and getting a good sniff.  She smells brilliant....of fresh air and ?????I have no idea what else.  She has no smelly doggy odour even though I have only bathed her once at 13 weeks(she's 8 months).  My other dogs absolutely stink!
Why is this? They are fed the same and walked the same places.  Treated the same way when wet from a walk.

Does anyone else have a weird secret? Or a beautiful smelling dog obsession?:)

my dogs smell good, I brush them regulary, change their bedding and like me, after I shower and put on fresh clothes we are smelling sweet! kennel dogs will have a smell if outside, imo

Not all breeds have doggie odour, my dachsies don't , I love their smell when they are warm and cuddled up in bed with me.

I find a dogs diet has a lot to do with dog odour .

Since we have fed raw our girls don't really have a doggie smell .

I love the smell of my poodles, and they've all had the same smell and my confession is that I love the smell of wet poodles and poodle feet!  I have outed myself as a freak but lying in bed at night if my standard's paw is near me I love to sniff it, sort of smells of popcorn and earth!

That is my confession! :)

My breed and all the northern breeds have very little dog odour.

When I visit people with Retrievers and spaniels I'm very aware of the smell.

Some short coated breeds, like boxers, Dobes, Rotts also have a stronger smell.

>Not all breeds have doggie odour, my dachsies don't

Dals don't either, which is one of the things I love about them. :-)

Multitask you are not alone in being a freak,I was amazed when US owners of dachsies raved about their feet smelling of corn chips/doritos, when I checked them out for myself they do, provided they haven't tramped through something nasty in the garden recently.

I have a terrier type mongrel that smells of pepper and my HWV's smell of earth and grass, with honey ears and popcorn paws.  Heavenly    ...although the youngest currently has a faint odour of muck spreading about his person.  I think I can deduce where he was walking with OH this afternoon!!

My daughter likes a lungful of doggy whiff whenever she gets home, or feels a bit miserable, and says the smell of damp warm dog is the smell of home  :)

Our neighbours springer always smelt of sour milk - and I always needed to wash my hands after touching her as she was greasy too

I have 2 raw fed Vizslas (a smooth & a long) - they smell lovely - but only very close-up - you can't smell that we have dogs in the house.  One smells a bit like freshly baked biscuits - the other is a pup and I don't feel she has 'come into her own smell' yet.  But her little shiny feet smell lovely.  Oh yes - and their little salty noses . . .

I have 2  German Shepherds, one is nearly 13 years old  and the other is 20 months and they dont smell, I love to snuggle up to them. now my westie she likes to sleep on the bed and we often get the wiff of badger or horse poo lingering on the pillows. Love them to bits.

My Bedlingtons don't have a smell as such, but their bedding does get whiffy if not washed regularly - soon sorted with bio washing powder.

To me my dogs smell of washing dried in the sun/wind - lovely!

I certainly notice the smell of other dogs, especially retrievers, cockers, springers,  - actually most gundogs an d many other breeds.

worst I ever smelled was a Bloodhound at LKA - I could smell him from around the corner 20 yards away :(   quite took my breath away.

I've forgotten the last time my dogs were bathed, it's rarely necessary except for a show, and we haven't shown in about a year now.

I always think pups smell of wee and weetabix                   - odd really, cause it's the same whatever they're fed on!

PS so you got your longcoat then ginjaninja - how is she?

now thats odd.Ive never understood how i can stick my nose in a dogs coat, and love the smell-yet sometimes my house reeks,I was only discussing this recently,my dogs arent smelly critturs,Im happy to have them cuddled up,but the house is a different matter, and I do clean it(honest!)People will say"oh,its because youve got dogs"-but the dogs dont smell bad!Does anyone else get H O (house odour)and how do you cope?
- By inka [ie] Date 26.08.12 19:18 UTC
Mine always smell like biscuits :)
- By tooolz Date 26.08.12 19:49 UTC
Most of mine smell sweet, some of shampoo and some of grooming spray.
If they ever smell 'off' it usually comes from their faces, eyes and around mouth area.
- By cracar [gb] Date 26.08.12 20:01 UTC
Dill, you are right.  Washing and fresh air!  So lovely.  Like my kids when they come in from playing outside.  I love to snuggle in and get a good sniff!!lol.  I'm glad I'm not the only mad woman who sniffs her dog!!lol

As for HO? I have no carpets and my sofas are leather so the only thing that can get 'doggy' (apart from the actual dogs!!lol) is the vetbed that my lot have scattered around the house.  Everyday, I scoop up all the pieces and hang them over the fence out the back to freshen in the wind and about once a week, I will chuck them in the machine for a wash.  The stair carpet is getting to the end of it's life(7 yrs later) and is getting a bit wiffy but a spritz of febreze soon sorts that.  My doors/windows are open 27/7 so this might help? I dunno, I haven't noticed and none of my family/friends have ever mentioned a smelly house.
- By furriefriends Date 26.08.12 20:29 UTC
I have 3 different breeds and yes the smelly one is the retriever ! I put it down to her constant habit of rolling in everything and anything smelly. A daily bath for her would be lovely as it is I do her as often as is practical  then she smells lovely and I keep the house clean and keep windows and doors open as much as possible
- By colliepam Date 27.08.12 07:10 UTC
My son delights in telling me my house pongs!I have a leather 3 piece, but carpets everywhere, maybe time to wash them again then!Oddly, the lady I clean for ,has very smelly labradors-even the vetbed honks after washing!Yet her house doesnt smell.

I woudn't dare to smell my dog's feet! Lol
I bath them every fortnight otherwise would I die of poisonous vapours.
- By lisaD [gb] Date 27.08.12 14:13 UTC
I like a sniff of my Goldie's fur and feet...but my favourite thing is to smell her ears!  Sounds a bit more weird when you type it out loud!
- By STARRYEYES Date 28.08.12 19:47 UTC
there are some breeds that have a strong doggy smell at Ch shows ..always very noticable when passing through the halls. My breed doesnt smell but I find I do have to wash thier back legs on a regular basis or they can whiff of pee with the long coats.
- By cracar [gb] Date 29.08.12 11:34 UTC
It's a distinctly foosty, damp smell my dogs get.  Like a fungusy sort of scent.  Imagine the smell from damp hair in the armpit area and you've about got it! It's always been disgusting to me.  Our new girl(different breed) has such a different coat type that she is never damp too long or her coat dries super fast.  My dogs are always wet(either raining or in the river) everyday and it's like they just don't dry.
I just found that interesting as that would be a con for getting a dog of this type(the smelly gundogs) and a MAJOR pro for the working type coated girl I have!

Like Lisakom can't comment as the owner of two BH's, but since we work from home I do my very best to ensure they are clean & groomed daily!  The house is well aired!

I don't ever have to worry about Nando (GSD) having a doggy smell. I think he moults it all though because the house and his bedding gets wiffy sometimes. My Mum & I have a very strong sense of smell and we're both a little OCD with our cleaning and even that doesn't always keep on top of the smell if he has been somewhere stinky. I think it's because he moults a lot.

It might be your carpet/rugs. If I don't use the carpet cleaner on our big rug in the livingroom it starts to honk, and I only have one small SBT now, who smells lovely. Looking at the water that ends up in the cleaner it appears to be mainly mud, the rug that smells is wool, we have another one that's made from polypropaline and doesn't smell at all.

Daisy always smells of fabric conditioner for some reason, my first dog Louie always smelt of the sea, which was odd as we lived in the middle of the city and seldom went to the beach .
