One of the most popular is the indestructable petnap flexiguard.  I would never use plastic again after trying the metal ones.

I have the vinyl one mentioned in the above link, my Mum made fleece covers from blankets I got from the £1 shops.

Keep the flex outside of the whelping box and by the time the pups reached chewing stage it was no longer in use.

I bought a plastic one - it was trashed within a couple of days by a dog "nesting" in her bed :(

I've now bought one of the metal ones, largest size, with cover, and that is great

I used the plastic, but put it underneath the whelping pool (used a blow up kiddie pool for a whelping box) so mum couldn't dig it up and it kept it very warm.  A friend used it underneath the plastic tray in her box and it heated right through the tray.
