Ive just seen the KC registration figures for last year here goes:
Top Breed ( :( )
Labradors 35.996
GSD 14.117
Cocker spaniel 13.417
ESS 12.431
SBT 10.711
This is a nightmare for breed rescues labs especially are a victim of their popularity. These are not all in loving homes,if you are thinking of breeding please consider thses figures and make sure you have good homes ready for the pups

Don't forget, Mattie, that these are just the KC registered dogs. What about the unregistered ones, from puppy farms etc? This is just the tip of the iceberg. :(

Yes, and there seem to be a lot of unregistered pups about in the popular breeds. Far less in the rarer breeds, but even some of ours are Dog lovers registered coming from Northern Irish puppy farm.

we seem to have our fare share of breeders on here that dont register their pups either-youd think reading and seeing the implications that their conscience would get the better of them :rolleyes:

Linda Why? Since when is KC registration the be all and end all of dogs?

its not the be all bec--theres also housing them -keeping them safe-keeping live stock safe when your around them, being honest in your dealings about dogs -theres lots to owning dogs, the kc reg being one of them, you only have to read the boards to see that most of the problem dogs have come from unregistered litters, possibly unknown breeders, the sort that ship whole litters off to whoever will buy them and sell them on to anyone
not sure why you keep asking me when you know our veiws are completley opposite of each others,

Is there a weblink where I could see the full list of figures? I'm quite curious about the rise within my own breed.
Thanks
Julie :)

Excellent :) Alaskan malamute. If you can see the rapid growth in litters since the 1980's you might understand my curiosity. I know it's a good thing that the breed is growing in the UK, but when you see the amount of mals in rescue in the USA it's also quite worrying. Many thanks :)

for Taffyparker, the figures are out for malamutes 238 last year but when you compare that with 40 in 1993 I suppose its a lot.
labs as I said last week are 35.996 but in 1993 they were 25.261
Golden retreivers in 1993 were 14.685 and last year 10.526 so thats good for them as there are equally as many goldies in rescue every year as labs.
Last year Gsd were second in popularity 14.117 but in 1993 there were 19.960 registered so thank goodness they have gone down.
The poor Labrador almost everyones favourite and the one of the most rescued dog to boot ! :(

Yes , I saw the number of Mals registrations for last year too ...it is actuallt quite staggering when you compare the figures they have there:
1993 = 40
1997 = 87
2001 = 156
2002 = 238

i have had by quaterly breed record supplement for the utility group and shih tzu have increased rapidly!!!!! i just hope they have all got good homes?
I think one of the more worring results must be the Dogue de Bordeau
1993 - 0
1997 - 0
2001 - 661
2002 - 797
Most of the newer imported breeds rise slowly over the years but this is a massive increase
Christine

Blimey, that's worrying. I suppose this is the effect of using specific breeds in adverts, TV trailers, etc.
I hope there are enough responsible owners out there for all these puppies, but somehow I doubt it :(

like the 101 dalmations senario !!!

Absolutely right. (I would say "spot on" but that would be a
very bad pun!) About 8 months after the release of each film, the numbers of young, male dogs coming for rehoming rises dramatically, most of which have been bred by/from dogs unknown in the showring.
There simply aren't enough GOOD homes out there.

Hi
I might be refering to the wrong films but the dog in 'see spot run' is a bull mastiff.
Archer

I meant "spot on" as in dalmatians have spots....!! Yes, I said it was a
very bad pun. :D

I was quite alarmed to see that Munsters had over 150 pups registered for 2002, we normally keep around the 100 mark, maybe a few above or below...just hope they've all got good homes as they still aren't the most recognised of dog breeds.
Has anyone received the fourth quarter's BRS for 2002 yet?
Christine
Mattie just seen the figures for Border Terriers, we are now 11 most popular.
We are increasing by approx. 1000 each year for the last few years and it worries me.
It is very obvious from the Border Welfare that rescues are increasing pro-rata, we are suffering from puppy farmers jumping on the bandwagon, as they are an easy breed to sell.
What worries me most is that I now average at least 15 puppy enquiries per week, and if reputable breeders haven't anything available they will get a puppy anywhere, so supplying the puppy farmers wth sales.
I do try very hard to persuade them to wait until someone does have puppies, but we are very much in the want one get one now era.

Mattie,
Could you do me Beardies please? Thanks
Anne :-D
