Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Is her whelping date nearer?
- By gabbie12 [ie] Date 22.08.12 21:32 UTC
Hi,
My friend has a dog that is pregnant. she went to the vets with the dog when she thought it was 5 weeks pregnant, but the vet did an ultrasound and told her it was only 3 weeks pregnant or less.
Yesterday i was at her house and noticed that her dog who should be 6 weeks pregnant according to the vet looks a lot more pregnant. My friend is going to the vets this friday with her dog for another ultrasound, but i was just curious, is it possible that the vet could have read the ultrasound wrong and that the dog is nearer to whelping than expected?

Thanks

I am assuming no one knows when the bitch was in season or when she was mated.

If that is the case who knows, depends on the vets expertise, though few are experts re breeding.

Certainly very few vets would detect a pregnancy by ultrasound before 3 weeks.

If your friend thought she was further on, then she must have some reason fro thinking this, what was her reason?

If the mating and season dates are known then you should nog be more than a few days out.

At 3 weeks it would have been too early to have seen pups, even scanners who do nothing else but scan different species wont scan a dog before 28 days and most prefer a bit later.

I think your friend is right in getting the dog checked out again, an Xray will tell how mature the pups are, when skulls and spines are seen easily then there is usually less than 10 days to go.

When is the due date by mating? Was the mating witnessed? Could the bitch and stud mated 2 weeks later than thought, unless there has been a split season a bitch doesn't stay receptive for that long.

I think the the vet got the first scan wrong and with such a difference should have offered a second scan 2 weeks later.

According to her dates, the dog should be between 56-58 days pregnant. she owns the stud dog also and bred them over a three day period. They did tie about a week later when they were at the kennels when my friend was on holidays, so that is why she thought the vet was right.

Well the vet was two weeks out, I thnk a rescan may be useful, or an x-ray to determing how far alogn she really is.
