Topic Dog Boards / Health / Update on Zuma's nose

HURRAY, he had the last of his antibiotic tablets yesterday, (he had a pseudomonas infection on the lower part of his nose) he started taking them on 27 June. Vetmedic lists them at over £3 PER TABLET and he had 49 of them  so I don't know what they will be from the Vet but thank goodness they will be on his insurance :-D as will the swabs etc and not from my pocket!

Pmonas is not unusual in ears and cattle and reptiles can get it but he (senior vet) had not seen it on a dogs nose before!!
Had GSD with non-functioning para-thyroid - not unusual in cats but never seen it with a dog!  and a cat with a lump that turned out to be a fur ball growing under the skin - not seen that before!!  oh and a dog that went into anaphylactic shock from an ant bite.
WHAT next I wonder

My old dobe had a pseudomonas infection in her nail beds - that was a first for her vet!

Fingers crossed your fella's nose is fine now, I know what a sod it is to beat!

Best wishes Chris for a speedy recovery x

Nikita, how did that manifest?

I have a dog who has already had 1 episode of pseudomonas in his ears and is currently experiencing his 2nd.  As a separate issue he has recently pulled two nails straight off his toes, with ease - literally degloved them in front of my eyes; he lost another whilst climbing out of a stream: a dewclaw has fallen off: and yet another nail had lifted off the quick and was growing away.

I've discussed the issue with his vet and she is going to discuss it with a dermatologist BUT might it be connected to his ear infection?

It's an expensive business isn't it tatty-ead - thank heaven for insurance!!  Fingers crossed that Zuma is now on the mend.  Are you applying anything to his nose or were the AB's the only treatment?

The ABs were the only treatment and nose is now black and looks normal again, BUT I have that sinking feeling, he finished the ABs on Wed,
almost every morning we have a greeting when he pushes his head at my legs/lap and has a rub/scratch all round his ears.............he HATES anything being done to the inside of his ears.....I have been working on it since he was a pup.....nearly 5 years  and can now look inside but still very reluctant to let me touch. This morning the inside of the stick-up bit felt a bit odd so managed to have a look and it looks a bit crusty and red!. I swear it wasn't like that on Friday and I don't think there was anything yesterday.
The only way to examine and clean properly will be to sedate him. You said your dog has another P.monas ear infection, what is it like as I am panicking that this is a reccurance that has moved :-(
I will try and talk to the senior vet tomorrow but in the mean time.............HELP!!!

With both my dogs it was excessive production of brown ear goop - at one stage I could have scooped it out with a spoon!  I expect it might start with irritation and itching but as one of my dogs always has ear trouble with allergies it's not really possible to determine the beginning - with him it simply doesn't clear up.  The other dog went almost immediately from head shaking to brown ear gunk.

It's worth mentioning though that it is high hay fever time at the moment so Zuma's ear irritation might be something very simple, and will pass :)

Biiiiig sigh of relief :-D :-D

Just back from vets, She had a good look at his ear including the thing to look inside and his inner year is clear so verdict is he has scraped it either with his foot or caught it on something like a twig or bramble, no sign of infection, so just keep an eye on it and it should clear up ok.
I asked about the total for the P.monas treatment...........£494 82  cough cough splutter!

A rant!!!
we were sat quietly waiting our turn with Z minding his own business when a female with a Malamute came to the door....it stared at Zuma and started growling at him so she stayed outside round the corner............then a minute or two later she came in and sat opposite us with the Mal eyeballing, growling and pulling at Z............who not surprisingly started to growl back! at which point I rapidly exited and waited outside till the vet called us in by the side door. She made NO attempt to stop it eyeballing and pulling...............Aaaaargh
