"Surfing the net" as we occassionally do, I came across a veterinary site, on which was posted a long report from a vet, saying that raisins and grapes are poisonous to dogs. Has anyone else ever heard of this?
- By nicolla [gb] Date 25.10.01 17:31 UTC
Hope not as we use both of these at dog training. My dogs prefer them to dog treats.
And beware leaving a bag of grapes unguarded in this house cause the dogs will steal them and leave us the empty bag!!! Mind you once the dogs attacked the fruit bowl and all they left were the apple stalks, the banana skins and the orange peel!!!

I have heard the same thing..
I feed our dogs naturally (BARF) and it was mentioned on there
I will ask if anyone has the info still,if they do I will post it on here.

I have never heard of that. Our dogs love grapes, well, any sort of fruit in fact. Our GSD's nickname is 'Fruit Bat' & because of him we have to put the fruit bowl somewhere high enough for him not to be able to nick any.

Reefa has eaten grapes (and ever other type of fruit come to that) all of his life and he hasn't suffered any adverse effects :P then again ... being a GSP, doubt I would notice them if he had. lol

My dogs don't like grapes, but they will eat fruit cake if it is left unattended. Also they will eat almost any other fruit, (Trev particularly likes tomatoes!). My friends dogs like grapes and she feeds them to her dogs. by way of a treat. I know Sky has been known to pinch a bag of grapes.
I went via pedigree dogs board, to the vet links there and that is how I came across this article.

I used grapes when starting my Aussie to show stand as he would just stand there licking the grape while I placed his legs. They have to be really sweet ones though, otherwise he turns his nose up at them.

I subscibe to an American publication, Dog World and last month one of the major articles was about the danger of feeding dogs raisins and grapes. The gist was they can cause kidney failure and produce unusually high concentrations of calcium in the blood. The symtoms are very like those for rat poisoning.

It is interesting to hear about the kidney problem, it was on mentioned on this site. my friends dog was ill a while back and they suspected poisoning. I ask her about the grapes.

Hi, could it be that its the pips that are poisonous? I gave our Lab an apple core or two a day with no seming ill effects, and then years later found out that there was cyanide in the pips, and to never give them to dogs!! Didn't appear to do her any harm thank goodness.

We have ALWAYS given apple cores to our dogs for as long as I can remember & they haven't come to any harm. But then it's a bit like the chocolate situation. That is supposed to be poisonous to dogs but my Min Poodle never came to any harm, nor my nan's Standard Poodle, who always had one of those Wildlife bars after his tea.
