I have a yorkie ,year 1/2 old, trying to breed her .Both are very willing but, she is 5 lbs. he is 2 1/2 lbs.and three yrs. old. About the time they are almost going to get connected his little legs seem to give out. She is a bit taller than him and we have tried helping some but he doesn't seem to like it when we touch him when he's doing his business. She just lays her head on my arm and lets me sooth her. They've seemed to do what i've heard as slip mating but not for more than a minute. It's a first time breeding. Her heat started 1-11-03. We are on day 13 now and have had them together an hour or so a day since day 9.They started getting serious on day 10. Both are healthy ,well tempermented dogs. I would love any information I could get. And would take any suggestions. Thanks Missy

Day 13 is usually around the best day to mate. if he is much smaller try making a platform around her so that he is higher. Sometimes if they haven't been used before the boys are always clued up properly on what they are supposed to do.

I do you succeed.

yappy, Thank you for your responce to my problem!:) What do you suggest for a platform? Pillows or something or build an actual platform? Thanks missy

Try a phone directory with a rubber mat on top so he doesn't slip, as it sounds as if the bitch is helpful.

Often toy breeds like Yorkies don't tie, and if he has penetrated the bitch and been there around a minute there may have been time for him to deliver the semen rich fraction of ejaculate.

yappy & brainless, Thanks so much for the input , it worked. They got tied today, for about 5 minutes. The platform idea worked. Thanks again, Missy

When we started trying to breed , the dogs did 'slip mating' for 3 days, then tied 2 days with a day in between. I'm a little worried about having pups come early due to the slip mating. I don't have much information on the chances of this happening. Any information would be appriciated. Thanks

If your bitch became pregnant from the slip mating, which is possible, then the puppies will not be early as they will have gestated from that mating not the later ones.

I work out a due date from the first and last mating that way I've a good idea when the puppies should arrive. If I need a pregnancy confirmed I scan on the 28th day from the last mating to be sure that any whelps are a minimum of 28 days gestation, an experienced scanner can tell you which mating was sucessful.

Hi, It is generally thought that a dog ejaculates the fertile sperm part of the ejaculate about a minute after penetration, so normally if a slip mating has been very brief then it won't have got that far, unless he has kept trying several times in the same mating atempt.

I would not discount her having taken on the days they slip mated, but do not panic if she appears to be overdue to those slip matings, as it is more likely she wasn't ready, and that is why she didn't tie, and wiull have taken on the later matings.

Thank you, that's what I thought. Just wanted another point of view and any other advice I could get. It's easy to panic a little when your attached to a pet. And my children are more attached than I am. Thanks again
