Topic Dog Boards / General / A wonderful breeder ( and they are a CD breeder !)

I would just like to say I have been dealing with my mother's dogs breeder over the last few days and he is a credit to what a good breeder should be.

My mother is in hospital after a fall and sorted the breeder to come and get the dogs whilst we suss out what is happening.

I was quite shocked on how bad a condition they were in ( as fat as a barrel and only just been able to walk)

I have spoken extensively to them apologising for the state they are in. I have said that if they do go back then she will be read the riot act by me and will keep them on a strict diet and she will have to get a dog walker to take them out and do general
maintence ( clipping claws and foot hair)

He has been good and has said they can stay indefinitely and what ever the outcome they will have a home

I am quite annoyed that she has got them in such a state and must admit more annoyed with my sister who has dogs herself and goes in everyday. Those poor dogs. All least they are in boot camp now and are been forced to excercise and are on a strict diet.

They granddad of the girls is 15 1/5 and they look older than him !

It does make you wonder about people who struggle to look after themselves and having dogs doesn't it.

Don't be too hard on your mum, at least now you know she needs help with the dogs and so does she, she obviously has been in denial as many are. :-)

Trouble is many dogs are in homes with people who cannot offer the correct exercise and grooming needed, some through lack of knowledge and then there are some whose owners just can not do it, but are too stubborn to ask for help or can't afford it and love their dogs too much to admit it, so they will just plod on.

When my mother broke her foot she ended up staying with me for 3 months having 7 dogs herself, what on earth would she have done otherwise? Imagine the bill for 7 dogs to be walked, kennel costs would have been horrendous luckily we are a large family (I guess she wouldn't still have that amount otherwise) and able to have a lot of dogs between us as there is always someone to help if needed, but there must be thousands of people without this support system.  What on earth do they do?

The breeder is fantastic to have had the dogs and to be taking good care of them and getting them into shape, thank goodness she did get the dogs from a reputable breeder. Though I dare say you would have had them otherwise continually saying "I didn't get them in this state!" when bumping into people. :-D

Hope your mum will be well soon and very proud to have one of our CD breeders shown to be doing what good breeders should.

Good show - whoever you are. :-)

Yes sorry wasn't having a dig at my mother but feel that this situation shouldn't have happened.

I am just disappointed

Difficult as parents are usually the last to take advice from their children! Great the breeder has taken them and I hope that they are fitter when she gets home.

On another note,  I noticed either on the KC website or in one of the dog papers that the KC Charitable Trust have a helpline for breeders who find themselves with too many dogs to care for or who are unable to cope with their dogs due to illness etc. I hope that this prevents some of the horror stories we hear about from happening.

Isn't it great to hear about a breeder who is happy to go that extra mile for dogs that they have bred.
