Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / We've gone a little bit raw !

Long story short, my pup arrived on Pedigree tins and quickly went off it so I put her on Nature's Harvest which she has since gone off. She is not a hungry pup and doesn't sit at my feet eagerly awaiting her meal. She is still on 3 meals a day.
Now she is eating Royal Canin dry - won't eat it wet. I put it down at breakfast and she eats it at some point during the morning. Now, I personally don't want her eating dry so this week I gave her some previously frozen minced steak and she wolfed it down !

So I am considering going raw now but I have 2 questions. I don't want to feed bone so am I right in thinking that the free flow mince at PAH contains adequate bone ? And can you point me in the direction of a good forum dedicated to raw ?

Any other pointers would be gratefully received.

Do you mean you don't want to feed bones as in a whole bone but would prefer to feed bone as part of the minced meat? If so then yes Prize Choice and the like are minced meat & bone

Facebook is probably a better place than forums now, there are a few raw feeding groups on there with lots of advise :)

I would recommend BritBarf which is a brilliant group but it can be quite slow to reply to your initial email requesting to join the group as it is run by one person who obviously also has a life elsewhere :-)

there are two or three decent raw feeding groups on facebook so well worth a look there, but prize choice only has a small amount of bone which probably woudnt be adequate.  There is a company called DAF whose minces have the 10% bone in required so might be worth a look but please really research raw before taking the plunge.

Hi, I tried the Prize Choice but when I defrosted it I felt that the bone was too jagged like little pins so I binned it. I thought it would have been more of a powdery, ground bone.
To be honest, with it being school holidays, I don't have the time that I need to surf the net and get the info I need so I am sticking to RC and some mince as she is being really picky at the moment but she will take that.
Thanks.

Chicken/Turkey Prize Choice is actually about 60/70% bone, as it is minced carcass.

A little raw mince is better than none but if you don't have the time to do the research properly then leave a totally raw diet til September.  In the meantime you can just use cheap supermarket free flow mince to make her kibble more interesting.  She can eat that frozen too which is great for teething (if she is - I can't remember how old she is).

There are some great books on raw feeding which will answer all your questions and make interesting bedtime reading - till you have a bit more time to think it through :)

the prize choice chicken/turkey does not contain that amount of bone.  This is from their website for the chicken

Ingredients
Chicken whole pieces, minced size 5mm max.
No artificial colouring, fillers, preservatives, additives or cereals. Products may contain small bone pieces - 4g/100g may be present

more like 4%

Agree with dvnbiker - it's not Prize Choice but some of the other pet food producers that can have this higher ratio (such as that from TPMS   ... and DAF too if I recall correctly)

woops, sorry! I think a fellow champdogs member told me that was the case. I feed DAF anyway.
