I've been completely glued to my screen from morning til night since Saturday - I wasn't expecting to be so devoted!

HUGE congratulations:
- to our Three Day Eventing team for Silver - they did so well and for it to go almost to the wire was thrilling to watch:
- to our Rowing Pair Helen Glover and Heather Stanning for Gold - wow:
- to the Mens Eight for rowing Bronze
- to those amazing boys for Gymnastics Bronze - such a shame it didn't stay on Silver
- to Lizzie Armitstead for Cycling Silver
- to Rebecca Adlington for Bronze in 400m Freestyle - an award not really expected

Fingers crossed for Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome for this afternoons Cycling Time Trials (I have my fingers crossed BW) :)
- By LJS Date 01.08.12 14:50 UTC
They are doing very well so think another couple of medals may well be possible!

Two Gold, one Silver and two bronze in one day! Not bad at all, I was so happy to see those girls get their Gold... they'll be on postage stamps tomorrow too!
- By Dogz Date 01.08.12 22:21 UTC
Isn't it wonderful, I am finding it all making me feel emotional and I am usually quite tough!
Due away on a visit next week and I dont really want to leave my telly....how sad is that?

Not sad at all.... I don't like sport at all really, apart from equestrian, but I am watching and really enjoying what we have at the moment.

If I still lived in my previous location I would certainly have got the train to London for the day, and gone to watch something live, with or without a ticket. I felt envious yesterday, seeing people camped out along the cross-country course in Greenwich Park, realising they were Joe public who were able to go along and watch for free.

Oh and this is for D-a-B and Merlot... one of the Gold winning rowing ladies is a local to us! Born in Yeovil, educated at Millfield and still lives in the area, I think! :)

> Oh and this is for D-a-B and Merlot... one of the Gold winning rowing ladies is a local to us

Watching Points West last night I noticed we appear to be making a bid for all of our GB athletes as local - even if they've only ever passed through our region on their way... Nice to have a genuine one :)

Dogz I've almost decided not to go - just need to check the equestrian dates before I delay my trip!!
- By dogs a babe Date 02.08.12 14:17 UTC

Astonishing what a team :-o another world record
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 02.08.12 21:19 UTC
Had a free afternoon and have been glued to it - what a day! 2 more Golds, 2 silvers, and I think a bronze, at least! And Andy's through to the medal matches, 3 out of 4 of the remaining players will get a medal. Pity the schedulers have his singles match at 4 and his doubles match at 6, why they didn't have one match at 12 to give him a proper rest I don't know! And then Becky Adlington again tomorrow night, woo hoo!
- By dogs a babe Date 03.08.12 11:58 UTC
Thursday afternoon was great wasn't it

- to our boys for Mens Canoe Double, Etienne Stott and Tim Baillie for GOLD, David Florence and Richard Hounslow for SILVER - weren't they fantastic!
- to Peter Phillips GOLD for Double Trap
- to Gemma Gibbons SILVER for Judo
- to Chris Hoy, Philip Hindes and Jason Kenny for Cycling Team Sprint GOLD - flippin' ace

...and Friday morning rowing

- to Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins what a splendid GOLD for this pair in rowing - oh and I like to see Steve Redgrave get emotional :)
- to George Nash and William Satch for Men's Pair BRONZE
- to Alan Campbell another BRONZE in the men's single sculls final

I'm so enjoying this Olympics and I never thought I'd say that
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 03.08.12 12:01 UTC

Ditto. :-) I was a dyed-in-the-wool cynic but I'm delighted to have been proved wrong. :-)
- By pavlova [gb] Date 03.08.12 17:00 UTC

>Watching the triathlon and it's making me feel me feel ever so tired !

Another medal hopefully on its way !

Not for us unfortunately. Helen Jenkins is one of our local girls too! :(
- By LJS Date 04.08.12 14:20 UTC
Yes shame as the team work set it all up for her but she had been struggling with an injury.
- By Oldilocks [gb] Date 04.08.12 15:06 UTC
Had she? I didn't know that! She seemed to be too slow in the swimming IMO but maybe that was the plan! I can never understand the tactics!
- By LJS Date 04.08.12 15:18 UTC
Yes has had a knee injury for the last 8 weeks and so had only done about 80% of the running training she had planned to do so if she had been able to do it I think she would have been ok.
- By LJS Date 04.08.12 17:11 UTC
Wow that was the best performance so far by Team GB ! Incredible riding by the girls :-o
- By Dogz Date 04.08.12 20:12 UTC

Chuffed for them all!

Some encouragement to be taken for everyone; some of the gold medallists have only been in their sport a short time (one of the women rowers has only been rowing for 4 years) and some of the swimmers are very young, so encouraging for youngsters.
- By LJS Date 05.08.12 15:58 UTC
Well done Murray and the boys in the gymnastics how good was that !
- By LJS Date 05.08.12 16:07 UTC
Well done to Sailors as well a gold and a silver !

Have you seen the medal tables :-o
- By LJS Date 05.08.12 16:10 UTC
Yes but they need to look at the sport in schools as a lot of the medal winners are from private school education.
- By chelzeagirl [gb] Date 05.08.12 16:13 UTC
ohh we'r doing soo good even I'm excited for our GB,, LOL,,

Came here to ask something else tho,,, lol
- By Stooge Date 05.08.12 16:54 UTC

> Yes but they need to look at the sport in schools as a lot of the medal winners are from private school education.

.....well if that's what it takes :)
Seriously, though it's not just about schools though, it follows that these are the people who can continue to be supported by parents, for instance, as their sports careers develop.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 05.08.12 17:03 UTC Edited 05.08.12 17:12 UTC

>Yes but they need to look at the sport in schools as a lot of the medal winners are from private school education.

The state schools need to up their game. But their whole ethos is to treat all children the same - to equalise them - and not to work with their individual strengths.
- By suejaw Date 05.08.12 17:16 UTC
Certain sports attract privately educated for sure, like rowing and sailing as let's be honest it's not cheap some of these sports that require equipment.
A lot of the track and field are state educated as is one of the rowers...who's trying to promote it in London schools..
Schools can only do so much like spark an interest but it's the parents who need to help guide children. Belonging to sports clubs do cost, I know when I played tennis as a child at a private club wasnt cheap. Athletics clubs however are in comparison.. But it's finding the cost to travel in order to compete, like many of us do with dogs, lol!!

Kitesurfing is a new sport at the next Olympics and for basics board and kite it's over £800 as a rough guide.. Lessons are a few hundred just to get you through the basic stuff!!
Sailing lessons just basic level 1 & 2 were a few years back around £500 as I paid out for them...

Soo yes money is needed to progress beyond schooling, but then so do xboxes and other gaming machines, so really depends on priorities I guess in the household!!
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 05.08.12 17:25 UTC
It was awesome, we had tears of joy over here! They still need a little bit of work to clinch that double Gold though....
- By Stooge Date 05.08.12 17:32 UTC

> but then so do xboxes and other gaming machines, so really depends on priorities I guess in the household!!

I think it costs a bit more than an xbox to support an olympic career :).
It could mean a young persons career going on hold so it is all their lost salary as well as the cost of training etc and then it might all come to nothing through injury or just failure to develop as hoped. Enormous sacrifice for the average family I would have thought.
- By suejaw Date 05.08.12 17:56 UTC
A friend and old school mate was destined for great things in the 1500m, local training as a youngster and then started on training camps in the US for months on end, so yes I do see your point... You do see some families give up everything for their kids careers whether it be uni or sport or whatever!! Scholarships are available but I doubt enough on the sporting front...
Im sure that the US put lots more money into their sports stars and future stars... Just have to wonder where all this money will come from? :-)

Anyway what a great day, gold and silver in sailing today, gold and silver in tennis, silver and bronze in gymnastics - so far!!! Fanflippingtastic!!! :-D
