Some of you know that it is thought Molly (shih tzu) might have a soft palette. Vet not too sure if she has this cos when she looked at her throat when she was under anaesthetic for a recent spay it looked okay but one tonsil was very large and her throat looked sore. But today when husband took her for a short walk she seemed to "cough/choke" a bit and she was wearing a harness and nothing round her neck. Going back to vet for stitches out tomorrow so just wondered if anyone knew of anything specific I should ask her about today's walk. Molly was very excited and so jumped about a bit but husband didnt like the chokey noise she was making now and again and brought her home.
Many thanks Gina
PS She has been fine since he brought her home.

Hi Gina
I wonder if the tonsil has always been large and that's what has caused her coughing episodes in the past ? Can dogs have their tonsils out ?? - I don't know !!
Just a thought.

When we took the dogs to the park a couple of weekends ago I forgot to put their collars in the car, so we took them round on their car harnesses. Abby still pulls occasionally and was choking a couple of times. On checking the position of the harness, the top edge was above the breast bone and able to pull against her windpipe. Could that be the case with Molly?
I hope she's okay.:)

Hi all.
Took Molly to the vet for stitches out. All okay. Vet said to watch what happened next time we took her for a walk and to take her back if it happened again - could have been what Dizzy said or just excitement. So pleased :) :)
Gina
PS Got to today without a bath cos of stitches - 2 hrs before vets had to bath her cos "something" at the rear got messed in her fur - I dont know .... dogs .... :) :)

I walk an old ladies cavalier king charles and it has a soft palate problem, nothing serious but if she has too much exercise she lends to cough a little.
The vets advised short walks NEVER in hot weather and to keep her weight down {hard as the old lady loves and spoils her!}
Soft palate probelms tend to accur with dogs that have a 'squashed face' ie cavies, pugs, buldogs.
sounds like nothing to worry about just dont overdo the exercise to be on the safe side.

Thanks Emma. Shall be careful walking her now. She gets so excited - every time!!! Vet still not sure if it is a soft palette as there was no indication of one when she looked so still in the dark a little at the moment.
You dont live near Surrey do you LOL :)
