What is the current minimum recommended cage size for syrians and dwarves?

My neighbours have 5 syrians and a dwarf (unwanted mother and pups for the syrians), I am looking after them for a fortnight while the neighbours are on holiday.

The cages are TINY :-(  The biggest is the two-tier version of one of these:

And the smallest, roughly is about 12" long, 10" wide and 12" tall :-O  FAR too small :-( I can't find a pic of it but this is about the same size-wise:

The dwarf is in a rotastak, the big base with one room up top model (the starter thing I think).

I have some cages they can use - again two-tier versions of the first cage, taller versions though.  Would these be ok?  The hamsters are handled often and come out daily but they clearly do not have enough space, and very little to do.  The wheels are way too small too - just watched one trying to use hers and she's basically standing in it and walking a bit :-(

Try asking on Hamstere Central - it's the fount of all things hamstery

(I think that's it).
I'm sure the small cages will do temporarily - see if you can find instructions on HC for converting storage boxes, they work very well and offer a lot of space, as well as plenty of headroom to include a large wheel.

I don't think she realises they are too small - they've been in these cages for several months already :-(

I shall have a look there, ta :-)

Never, EVER use two tier cages for Syrians as they are at worst death traps, at best leg breakers.

The size of the cage isn't really that important -a good quality wheel of the correct size matters a lot more. It's vital that the wheel is big enough for the hamsters to be able to run without bending its back, and also without sticking its legs out the bars.

The wheels are all solid but only one looks big enough to me, that one looks like a Roly one.

What do you think of the flying saucer type wheels - these ones:

I use them for my mice, but most of my guys are oldies now and don't use them so I could spare at least 3.  They're the 6.5" diameter size.
