Please could I have some up to date guidance please. My maiden girl has come into season (finally lol) and I thought I had the worming situation all sorted.  However Ive been reading some reports about Panacur from day 40 and that it sometimes causes problems with pups.  TBH any pup Ive ever treated with Panacur puppy has ended up with the runs and Im not personally a fan of it but as the BOTB said Panacur from day 40 that is what I was going to go for (plus it is licenced for pups and pregnancy).

Should I worm today with Drontal which is my wormer of choice, day one of season and then at three weeks with the pups?  Or should I follow the BOTB?

What do you do?

I've always used the Panacur 10% liquid, but don't start the daily worming until the 47th day of pregnancy. Don't no why, it's just something I do.
When it comes to worming the Puppies at 2 - 5 and 8 weeks old I use the Panacur Paste, as it's easier than the liquid.

Having recently seen a litter of pups where the bitch hadn't been wormed during pregnancy, I'd say always worm from day 40 as per the BOTB. When the pups were finally wormed they nearly died because they had such a massive worm burden that the shock to their systems nearly overwhelmed them.

Worm your bitch now with Drontal if you like, but remember that the pregnancy hormones will activate the encysted worms she already has and re-infest her, so unless they're killed during pregnancy the pups will have worms from birth.

I would stick with drontal - if you have any doubts contact them and they'll give you the dosage and instructions for a pregnant bitch... I've heard nothing bad about worming during pregnancy with drontal nor worming pups with it.

Ive just come back from my vets with today's dose of Drontal and they are definately of the opinion that I should worm her with that today, then contact Drontal directly for the up to date directions and dosages.  They too have heard of problems with panacur and wont give the solution, only granules.  They are a large respected vet hospital and the vet I deal with I trust implicitly.  So will ring the people that make Drontal on Monday and get their guidelines.

Only bred 2 litters & used Panacur 10% with no problems. Planning my 3rd & totally intend to use Panacur. My breeder friend & mentor has used Panacur. She's not experienced problems either.

Would be very interested to be given websites quoting problems with using Panacur on a pregnant bitch. Anyone willing to offer such info? :-)

I'm with you on this one trialist.  Oddly I recently discussed this with my own vet, as I was stocking up with wormer at Cruft's and he just can't offer me such good deals.

I dose a tiny breed with Panacur 10% and have never, in all my years, had any sort of problem.  I asked him why I never have runny poos from pups, as I have heard people complain about this.  He reckons it is caused if pups have a bad worm burden, and the reason it doesn't affect my pups, is because mum was wormed while pregnant, so pups didn't have a heavy worm burden to contend with.

Anyhows, I totally accept that any breeder is going to recommend whatever they use that works.  As I've never had problems, I don't intend to change.   I don't use the paste, as I have never had a problem with the suspension.  But my breeds need such small doses that it's easy.  I understand that people with large breeds sometimes prefer the paste, rather than have white stuff sprayed all over them!  :-)

I use Drontal for adult dogs, and because I bought a good quantity from Cruft's got myself an awesome deal!  :-)

The only thing I never have in the house is Milbemax, I have 3 Collies, so it is never on my shopping list.
  

Hi, can anyone help, I was going to worm my pregnant bitch at 45 days with Drontal Plus as this is what the vet recommend, however just before doing so I sort advice from a few web sites and some other breeders who advised me not to use Drontal.  I have now bought some Panaur 10% but is it too late to start using it as it is recommend to use from day 40.

Don't worry, it's not too late to start using it; it just means you'll be worming a few days less than otherwise - but as there's no guarantee that a bitch will whelp on the due date people are often a few days out anyway. Better late than never. :-)

Thanks for that, it is such a mine field and this is my first litter so want to do the best I can for my dog.

Not so; the Drontal datasheet says
"Use During Pregnancy and Lactation
Consult a veterinary surgeon before treating pregnant animals for roundworms.
The product may be used during lactation.
Do not exceed recommended dose when treating pregnant bitches."

I've used Panacur 10% for years.  A friend started her bitch several days late, and, to be fair, the resulting pups were absolutely fine, with no sign of worms.  For a mattter of a couple of days I don't see you having any problems at all.

I have always used Mibamax on my girls but then they have no problems with it and it is what they are used to. Milbamax is not good for all breeds though.

I too have always used Panacur 10% daily and start at day 42 when I change my bitches over to puppy kibble,I have also read that it was the only wormer licenced for use in pregnant bitches.

I then use the same wormer on the pups and dam after whelping.

The other dogs in the house also get wormed, never seen worms in any of my dogs/pups.

I have never dosed  bitch whilst pregnant and have also never seen mature worms at the 2 week worming stage or any sign of worms for that fact. Definitely not like what was said above.

I started worming in whelp bitches 6 generations of bitches ago, at the time my children were small (so concerned for the risks to their health as well as the dogs), and have continued ever since.

I have never seen worms in any of my dogs or puppies and glad I have not after seeing what a rescue litter of GSD pups produced when wormed at 4 weeks old, and the poor health they were in with staring coats and pot bellies and pale gums due to the huge worm burden they had.

Obviously the dam had a huge burden herself and loads encysted in her tissues and passed on.
