hi guys my girl is day 61 and has been in 1st stage labour since ten last night so ten hours ago she is not pushing just heavy panting how long has your first stage last

1st stage labour (nesting and panting) can last up to 48 hours, but you need to be on hand to watch that she doesn't go into 2nd stage and have problems. Good luck - you've got a busy time ahead of you!

Provided she isn't distressed or passing a dark green discharge then it is OK to continue. Do you know how many you are expecting?
My first litter the dam went into labour at 8am and the first pup arrived at 11.40 pm.
Hope all goes well and you get healthy pups and dam at the end of it.

hi had a scan an saw 5 .he said go by second mating date as pups were not as big as the 1st mating,so on day 61.small flat faced breed.1st litter.she has been panting all night but not distressed little digging no discharge at all ,completely dry.

Has she been eating and drinking during this phase?
They can get very tired and dehydrated if the labour is prolonged, I give my girls Vet/Nutrodrops every hour or so to keep the energy levels up without making them full up, plain vanilla icecream goes down well too especially if they are not keen on drinking, it has calcium in it too.
Is this your first litter? Do you have a mentor [bitches breeder or studs owner] to give you support as they will know the breed and any whelping problems specific to that breed? You should speak to your vet and see if she needs to be scanned/ Xrayed to ensure the pups are not too big or there are 2 trying to get out together[that happened when my cat had kittens, there were legs of 2 different colours trying to get out and I had to push one back and get them out one at a time] or one lying in the wrong way and blocking the exit.
Keep us posted

hi no this is not my first litter however i have not had such a long time 1st stage.she had been eating and i did give her nutri drops and put some evaporated milk in her food this morning.today she has stopped panting and been a sleep on and off but still quite content.she has started panting again now and has refused her food which is a first.

Pleased to hear she hasn't been fasting all the time. I find Nutrodrops great for poorly dogs/pups as well as during labour, so many calories in a small amount of liquid.
Hopefully she will have them tonight.

well another restless night panting all night no contractions so i have been to vets and all seems fine with check up but had to leave her there for an xray and scan will find out in an hour fingers crossed all is well.one good thing shes got no discharge and is not dialating

After all this time I would expect her to be dilating, she may have primary inertia, hopefully the Xray will reveal a problem.
Keeping everything crossed for her

Wow! You left her for an x-ray and scan? I would have been following them to the x-ray room. I have always been there to settle my bitch down, and hold her while the procedure takes place. I've actually had a bitch in my arms while the scan was taking place. You wouldn't have seen me leaving the surgery!
Certainly sounds like inertia to me though.

well terrible night she was having contractions all afternoon but just not strong enough so decided for c section last night vet tried to talk me into oxytocin but i said no and spay her at the same time and we waited outside.3 pupsborn 1 very bad cleft so pts.the others lovely .we waited and waited the vet kept coming out saying she was slower coming round than they liked ,after 4 hours told me she may have internal bleeding and they were calling another vet out for his opionion.we was told to go home and at 1in morning told they were going back in as she was really poorly.they said there was a small bleed internally ,picked her up this morning poor thing she is very sleepy.i feel so sad for her.glad she wont have to go through that anymore and she is still with us

I just knew this was going to happen as soon as I saw that you had been told to wait 24 hours. So very sad that it happens as often as it does.
I hope your poorly girl picks up quickly, bless her. Good Luck.
aww poor girl sounds so much like what happend to 1 of our girls ...all the best x

So sorry things didn't go well, RIP little one.
I agree with Jean, the vet should have intervened sooner [ it wouldn't have helped with the pup with the CP]when she wasn't progressing rather than allowing the dam to get exhausted and then decide to do something and nearly losing the dam on the table, you were right to refuse the oxytocin as no pups had arrived and there was an obviously some physical reason for this and the uterus could have ruptured losing pups and dam.
You are going to be busy raising these pups, hopefully Mum will recover enough to help.

oh thank you so much i was thinking poor girl not something else.

Thanks for the update, glad all is progressing well.
If she was spayed then there won't be a uterus to contract when the pups feed, it may be pain from the wound site as the pups are feeding.

>she is panting a lot
Apart from any pain, a vet once told me that a bitches body works so hard to produce milk that panting is part of it.

mums tongue looksa little pale.do you think as she had to have two ops she is a little anemic.ive been giving her some nutri drops and b12 drops in her food .any other advise
By JeanSW

Why B12? I never supplement, as all she needs should be in a quality food. If she was anaemic, they should have advised you, so I doubt it.
Remember that her tongue will be sore if she is cleaning pups herself. Mine always go off complete food at this time. I give minced steak, white fish poached in milk and water, scrambled egg etc.
