Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Scanned too early, which date to go from ?

Ok I know I might be getting my hopes up here but im almost positive my bitch is pregnant. I think that maybe I had her scanned too early and she got caught from a later mating that I didnt even know had taken place until my partner told me AFTER the scan (grrr)

Yesterday she had egg white discharge, shes still swollen, she was heaving last night again and had a bit of frothy sick this morning in her crate. I am sure her belly feels firmer and 'fuller' than normal. Its certainly less squishy.

Im going to keep my eye on her but not get my hopes up too much, but my questions is that if she is pregnant should I go from the last mating or the first in terms of how many days she is ??

I really think.your clutching at straws. I was very sure my girl was and she even had a false labour. Scan revealed no pups. Keith scanned her last year with positive results number was wrong but I knew when she was done anyway. If your not satisfied have her xrayed

I found with my girl that she didn't feel firmer on the tummy but she had a sort of lumpiness underneath.

She had missed on her previous season and I'd been convinced she was pregnant because of feeling firmer, I now know that isn't what you need to feel.

A number of years ago, we were so convinced one of our bitches was having pups that we could see them moving.....she never had pups...our eyes were indeed deceiving us!!!

This early on there are no outward signs to see, her abdomen won't change shape till nearer 6 weeks by then the pups are growing rapidly and can't be hidden up in the ribs any more.

Phantoms can mimic a real pregnancy, weight gain etc. right up to and including labour in some rarer cases, when I had 2 bitches who had been mated the one who turned out to be having the phantom looked more pregnant than the one who was pregnant.

It is too early to Xray as the bones of the pups have to have started to calcify to be seen, last 7 days is the best time.

If you are going to get her scanned again leave it till 39/40 days so when you are due to start her daily worming and puppy food at 42 days you will have definite Yes/No, treatment of a pregnant bitch doesn't change till then anyway.

You should always scan 4-5 weeks from the date of the last mating. If you need any advise try www.scanforpups.co.uk. I use them for my scanning.
