Topic Dog Boards / General / HELP! Too young??
- By PippaPuppy [gb] Date 29.07.12 09:48 UTC Edited 29.07.12 09:51 UTC
My 16 month old BC bitch has been accidentally mated during her the middle of her second season - what do I do?!

Is she too young??

I don't know what to do for the best! Please help.
I know this is completely my fault but I just want to make sure she comes to no harm.

Thank you.

Don't panic :) It probably is too early and unplanned litters aren't ideal. There is an injection she can have to prevent a litter. I don't know much about it but someone more experienced will post soon, I'm sure :)

It happens. I also had this problem although my bitch was a lot older. I was due to mate her that season but my dog got to her, it was early on in the season but I wasn't prepared to take a chance and took her to the Vet. She was given Alizin. People said I was mad and should have let her continue as the mating on paper was okay but for me it was too close. I mated her at the next season and all was okay.

There is a jab - much like our "morning after pill."

No need to worry, I had a mismate myself and took my bitch to the vet and asked for the Alizin injection.  People seem to have mixed ideas as to when the best time is to have the jab.  I had it done 2 days after the accident, and would definitely do so again if I had to.

My bitch was absolutely fine.  I had 2 jabs, 24 hours apart.  Phone your vet, and try not to worry, as Alizin is much, much better than the old jab.

Is she too young to carry them? He's a little bit bigger than her which is why I am concerned.

Just so I am prepared, how much does this jab cost and what does it do? Will it make her poorly etc?

If your worried of costs then.the jab is a must. She's mentally too young and with a bc an unplanned litter isn't necessary.  You could have her spayed and two birds with one stone.

It didn't make my little Yorkie girl poorly.  Not sure if I remember correctly, but I think the jab was around £30 but honestly can't be sure.  However, it certainly cost far less than rearing a litter!

I don't think that your bitch would have difficulty carrying a litter, but believe most folk wait until a BC is around 2 years before mating.  I'm sure a Border Collie breeder will be along to talk to you about breed specifics.  I certainly think your girl needs to be a little more mature, I breed toys, and they are mated on a second season usually.  But that is normally older than 16 months.

I've never heard of this jab which is why I was unsure about the cost.

I do as well which is why I've panicked; I feel like a protective mother that's just found out that her teen is pregnant!

Just wanted reassurance from people who know what they are talking about, so I'm very grateful for everyones help and advice, thank you. :)
I know there are a few BC breeders on here so it would be interesting to see their prespectives and experiences too.

Take her to your vet and get the Alizin injection (two injections 24 hours apart). The manufacturers advise it's done when the season is finished (in case it happens again!) and it can be given up to 45 days after mating.

I'm off work tomorrow and tuesday - is it too soon to take her for it tomorrow?

Then not letting it happen again!

Try reading up about the injection on the internet, then write down any queries to ask the vet.

I don't think there is a "too early" timing problem just the " too late" after 45 days.

You will have to be very careful that the male doesn't get to her again after she has been given the injection.

She is too young to be having pups. Were you planning on breeding from her or were you waiting for her to be older before getting her spayed?

Take her to the vet tomorrow.   You may find that the vet advises leaving the injection until the END of her season - just in case your male gets to her again.    It is perfectly okay to do this - and your girl will be fine.

We've had to do this, and it is far better than to have an unplanned pregnancy before your girl is mature enough to cope/have all the necessary health tests - hips scored, eyes tested etc, etc, etc - especially when the male may not have had all these tests either!

I seem to remember the injection costing around £45 - but believe me, it will be far, far less than having to pay out for all the addtional expense that an unexpected litter will cost - even if all goes smoothly.

Your bitch is too young atm and would really need to be health tested (eyes, hips, dna) and show show/working potential herself. You should also be looking for a stud dog with these qualities.

I had it happen to one of my bitches. It happened a Saturday so I waited to the Monday then she had the injections. Her season continued for longer than normal but other than that no problems at all.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 29.07.12 19:28 UTC
She can be given the Alizin injection at the end of her season.

Thank you for all of your advice guys, to the clinic she will go!
