Topic Dog Boards / General / a long season....
- By STARRYEYES Date 26.07.12 11:14 UTC Edited 26.07.12 11:18 UTC
what a long 3 weeks this has been ... which looks like it may go on for another week... one of my girls should be finished today and that is counting from the first day I noticed her showing...
I though it was all going well as my boy was eating  for the first 2 wks ..which is unusual as for other seasons he has been difficult most of the way through... this last week he has refused to eat ..chicken , fish , mince, lamb steak... I can see he is considerably thinner...
I know it can alter season to season but this bitch (when mated) has previously been 10-14 day which has usually been the worst time with my male.
This last week if they happen to see each other when 1 in a crate the romancing has been amusing... although we keep them completely seperate and busy to take thier mind of it.

Gave all the dogs a bath yesterday to help remove the scent and freshen my girl up after her season.. today they are still extremely interested in each other.... so looks like another week before I feel safe... when she is not interested I know we should be ok.

This bitch is 9.5.

I wouldnt normally be bothered just unusual for this particular bitch............anyone else ever have this problem as it has normally begun to wane much earlier than this..

I had one bitch that had a terribly long season, and was mated (not planned) on day 28.  The vet said no need for Alizin as it wasn't possible for her to be pregnant.

Yeah!  Right!  :-)  :-)  :-)   Another lesson learned.

Just being nosey here, Starryeyes, is there a reason why you haven't spayed your bitch?

I neuter mine when they are not going to be bred from - it makes my boys' lives less stressful and I worry about the risk of pyometra.

My youngest resulted from a mating on day 31!

That was my thought too, though it could be a breed where the coat changes make the dogs life a misery re grooming.

Had a litter from a Pomeranian, mated after day 30 and a big litter for the breed resulted!

Hi ridgielover .. had this convo with my vet a while back now , his opinion is to leave her alone she is a fit health girl ... that the only reason it would benefit her at her age would be to make my males life easier and my own .... he is a breeder and his main interest is in canine  reproduction and natural therapies.....  I trust his opinion .
My breed are not good under anaethetic and  yes the coat would be affected. So we came to the decision that as long as we are vigil she will be left alone.
