Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Foolproof introductions of puppy to resident adult dogs

My two adult dogs are happy, well socialised dogs (male, 8, female, 3). They regularly meet other dogs and are used to a variety of other hounds coming to our home for foster care - ranging from a weekend to a month long stay - male, female, usually unneutered to begin with.

I will be introducing my pup to them in the coming months and want to make sure everything is done as positively as can be to give everyone the best start they can get. I will add that I also work with a sighthound organisation and organise regular walks and events where upwards of 40 dogs all meet for the first time (on lead always) and we have never had any issues, hounds always seem to know each other and get on well.

Typically when introducing any new dog to my own, whether it be a foster or a friend's dog whose staying a night, i bring all the dogs out (resident and new) and go straight for a walk. Doesn't have to be long, just has to keep moving. The dogs all tire out together and associate each other with a good thing. We then go back to the house and I usually have set out a large crate which th new dog can relax in with the door open, which my dogs would tend to ignore in favour of the sofa.

New pup will be arriving home at about 7pm so the plan is to head straight out for a short walk (this being a pup etc) and then back to the house. I am aware that there will be at some stage each dog growling/snarling/whatever as they set their boundaries etc and have experienced this before with adult dogs so no problem.

I have never introduced a pup into our home though so want to ensure all goes as smoothly as possible.

Your plan sounds great, and as your pup will of course be used to not only it's mother but the breeders other dogs they should have a good grounding in dog manners ab-nd take their cue from the adults as to how much interaction and of what kind will be tolerated.

Your lucky in that your pup coming in at over 16 weeks will be past the 'scary to adults unused to puppies' stage.

That's true! Yes, the pups love with other adult dogs so won't be surprised at all, I am more concerned that my older dog won't know what he is!! The plan is to have the pup sleep downstairs in a crate, and my two sleep in our room so they will continue that though i did think the first night alone may be tough on the pup so i might put my oldie down in his room for company.Thoughts? If i put my girl down she will just cry and I'd rather she not teach that habit to puppy ;)

By 16 weeks he will not be a little scary puppy anymore, probably at least the size of an adult whippet, so I wouldn't' worry about the not knowing what it is ;)
