Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / What is the earliest a bitch can whelp?

Hi everyone, my girl is 50 days pregnant. She is a small breed so i was wondering how many days early can she safely whelp?
I have read that puppies wouldn't survive before 58 days but have also read on here that 54 days is not unusual in a small breed dog. At what stage shouldnt
i be leaving her alone?. Thanks

I don't leave them alone for long periods from 10 days before due date from first mating, the bitch could go into labour at any time but the pups wouldn't be viable if too early.

Many toybreeds can and do whelp after 56 days with pups surviving.

I have whelped many small breeds.  I have more bitches whelp at day 56 than ever they do at 63.  :-)   Not actually sure I ever knew a toy bitch hang on that long.

I always advise people new to toys that they should be ready at least a week prior to due date.  7 days early is fine.

However, if anyone had a litter 10 days early, I would emphatically tell them to not even try resuscitation.

Of course, that is what I would advise.,  Not what I have done.  :-(

I have struggled for hours to save pups that were 10 days early.  I don't know why I put myself through the extra heartbreak.  It isn't possible for anything to survive without properly developed lungs.  It is my worst nightmare.

yes 56 days and they would be viable, anymore than that and I also agree I would not even attempt to resuscitate as the likelihood of them surviving, especially toy breeds would be very low if at all.

thank you for your replies. I was thinking they could be a week early and wont leave her on her own much now. The point about them being 10 days early is very interesting but i hope that wont happen
