When you have to feed Chicken and Rice for upset tummies to your dogs, do you go and buy a fresh chicken and cook it for them?
Also what sort of Rice do you use?

Any chicken will do as long as it has no bones. I usually get the Asda chicken breast pieces and boil then along with some long grain rice in the same pan (Makes the rice tasty) boil it untill the rice is very very soft. However I more often use mashed potato (Nothing added just boiled potato's mashed) and chicken or white boneless fish.

Economy long grain rice is fine do not drain off the stodge and buy an economy chicken to boil untill the meat is ready to fall off the bone. (DO NOT FEED THE COOKED BONE !)  Boiled rabbit or economy white fish, all good!

I buy chicken portions or a whole chicken depending what is cheapest or most easy available when I need it.  I use whatever white rice I have in, long grain, thai, basmati etc and I don't 'wash' the rice before cooking

Boil the chicken til it falls off the bone and remove the meat/carcass from the water/stock.
Cook the rice in the stock until it the grains have all but disappeared
In the meantime go through the meat carefully removing bones.  Chop larger pieces or meat and cut the skin into smaller sizes.
Add the meat back into the rice mixture with additional liquid, if necessary.
I keep some out to feed but I freeze the rest into suitable portion sizes as I don't like to leave rice hanging around and it's so easy to defrost

I find rice upsets several of mine, so I buy cheapest possible pasta and cook it until really soft -works brilliantly. Been doing that for the past ten years now.

Was told by my Vet 50 years ago not to feed chicken and rice for an upset tummy unless it was part of the dog's normal diet.  He said that if it wasn't, it was changing the normal diet which could cause more problems and chicken upsets many dogs.

He would say starve for 24 hours and then give very small quantities of the dog's normal food every 2 hours for the first day and if all was well, then half rations morning and night the next day and on the 3rd day, back to normal. :)

I use the "value" range of supermarket chicken wings/thighs and boil till meat falls off the bones and add either frozen or Microwave sachets of rice, giving the dog the liquid from the boiled chicken helps with any dehydration as it is tasty to drink.

@westcoast, whilst I am sure that is/was good info, I don't believe complete was the common way of feeding back then, and it seems all to often to be complete food that irritates the upset stomachs nowadays

chicken breast which I cook or white fish given along with boiled potato.

I also have in a couple of tins of RC sesitivity given along with tree bark powder and FortiFlora Canine Nutritional Supplement added to the food for a few days , before returning to usual diet.

I think mashed potato is the way to go for dogs that can't tolerate rice or wheat.
A vet nurse friend suggested Readybrek made up with water, it's just instant oat flakes with no salt or sugar added, it may suit wheat intolerant dogs better as oat gluten is slightly different.

With rice, look out for places that sell rice flakes/flaked rice [I think the Co-Op still sell it] as it's fairly instant and gives you the sloppy porridgy effect you need - microwave rice and quick-cook long grain isn't really soft enough and may well pass straight through.

Westcoast - completely agree. I always thought I was doing the correct thing giving my dog chicken and rice if he'd been ill or if I felt he was a bit off colour. Turned out it made things worse but luckily I realised fairly early on. Now, as soon as his appetite returns he's straight back to his normal food, just little and often, until he's 100%.
