Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / getting him to go outside !!!
- By lel [gb] Date 23.01.03 19:38 UTC
I know toilet training is asked about alot but can anyone just help on this ?
I thought pup was
doing great - he always went on a towel and never anywhere else .
When we go for a walk he will do his "business " outside but when we are at home I cannot get him to go out . I have tried moving his towel closer to the door and even put one on the step close to the door but no matter how long we stay out there for he walks back in dirties.

Have you tried giving him a treat when he does go outside? Try it when you take him out first thing in the morning or after eating when you can be sure that he will go. As soon as he's finished, praise him and treat him. After a few times, our puppy began looking for a treat as soon as he finished going, which usually means that they've gotten the hint.

Crazydogs suggestion worked for me! She (my yorkie) knows now that if she goes outside she will get a treat. She sits and waits for it as soon as we come in. If she doesn't go, she doesn't get one. She knows that too. They learn fast when it comes to treats! So 99% of the time she goes. Shirl :D

MY dog will not even attempt to go outside. I dont have a back yark to leave her in so its hard to take her out as much as she goes. Is there any paticular feeding process that I should follow to help ensure a good training procedure?

My dog Sierra does the same thing. I can have her out for five hours walking all around and she will not go outside. She will only on paper in the kitchen of my house. Did you get a reply from anyone else on here if so did they give you any helpful information? I am about to pull my hair out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My other email address is mspatz@aol.com

If an owner starts off by paper training, then what is effectively happening is that the pup is being taught that it is the right thing to do (to go inside.) and some keep doing it.

Owner needs to get rid of all associated smells using a special biological washimg powder or something is available in pet stores.

Also take some of the stained paper outside so it smells right.

Then go back to basics, but take pup outside each adn every time, and reward with lots of praise and a really good treat such as sausage or chicken.

Thats why I'm finding it so hard -because we always praised him for doing his "business" in a certain place and now he cant seem to grasp the concept of doing it somewhere else. On the odd occasion he has been outside we have praised him lots but maybe i need to use the treat method as suggested .
At what age should apup be fully trained (on average) .
Thanks

lel.
i had this problem when i first got my westie i paper trained him thinking it would be easier to eventually get him to go outside but it just got all confusing and frustrating to me.
my westie is now 14 weeks old and is 80% house trained now.
this is what i did and it worked for me.
i got up in the morning and removed all paper and cleaned my carpets and sprayed water/vinegar everywear to disguise any smells and every 15 minutes took toddy outside i sat on the door step and totally ignored him (i am not condoning smoking but by the time i had smoked my fag (naughty naughty i know) if he had not done anything i brought him back in and watched him like a hawk this i kept doing for about 2 days when he did go outside to do his business i didnt bring him straight in i played with him then rewarded him.
we got into a routine
no pooh ignore
pooh - play and treat .after a week i was able to leave the back door open and he just goes outside does his business and then waits in the kitchen for a treat.
if he regresses i just start all over again.
and it has got easier and easier.
we still have slight accidents but for his age he is doing good
it will be hard work for a couple of days but stick with it
will be worth it

The age of being fully housetrained varies a lot, Lel, and also depends on the breed as some are notorius for being quite diffixult to housetrain :)

My girl was so good, then i went and buggered it all up by forgetting that the patio doors are CLOSED in winter and had to show her that she now needed to go out of the kitchen door instead - poor confused pup, and silly me :o

I'm really not sure what the average age is - but they can have relapses due to hormones etc when teenagers so there may be a little backward step during adolescence (but not always so take heart ;) )
