Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Moose is in heat, have a couple of questions.
- By dollface Date 18.07.12 23:33 UTC
Today is the 18th and she just started her heat. She'll be 10 months on the 2nd- she's a lil messy so had to run out and buy some panties.

Have a couple of questions :-)

1) Does this mean she would be in standing heat come the 30th? Is that when I should start kenneling
    Junior as well?
2) How long does the heat last?
3) When do I not have to worry about putting panties on her and keeping Junior away from her?
4) would her next heat be in about 6 months or 9 months you figure?

Thank You
:-)

I've had bitches ovulate on day 4, so I would never take chances.  And I keep boys away for 4 weeks.  Yes, I HAVE had a bitch conceive on day 28.  :-(

I too take precautions from day one just to be on the safe side.

Seasons are normally 21days but the first one seems to be nearer 28 days.

You will have to wait and see what pattern she follows as to frequency of seasons, I had a bitch who added a week each time between seasons.

same here had a girl mate on day 28 so i now keep apart over that ....:)

Basically going to say the same as others, best be on the safe side & be cautious, keep separate for 4 weeks.
Every bitch is different even within a breed & every season is different. It will take around 3 seasons to see a pattern, if there is one & I would say it can be as little as 4 months & as much as over a year between!!

I separate mine early on (I have 2 dogs and 2 bitches, only 1 bitch neutered) I then start to reintroduce them, oldest male first, on lead, just to see how they react. If he pulls at the lead he is immediately put back into his crate and I wait another day before trying again. Only once he is no longer interested in the mating game will I start full integration. the young male is not allowed any where near until the older boy is happy. This could well be 4 weeks after the bitch has started her season.

Thank you :-)

I'll def keep them apart for a month for sure! I do have pannies on her and they are only allowed together under my watchful eye,
rather then that either she is in a kennel or he is. I left her out last night and she left her pannies on and I had Junior in the
kennel. When she does get closer to the standing heat I will prob leash Junior to me, I don't allow them unsupervised at any time.
Here's crossing my fingers my son listens to me while we are at work. Told him to pretty much keep her kenneled so he doesn't have
to deal with the pannies and never leaves them out together.

Thank you :-)

If you cannot be 100% sure your son will be very very carefull, why not put a padlock on her kennel while you are out? How long are you at work for? if it is just a couple of hours she will be fine. Obviously if you are out for longer she will need to be let out for some of the time so that would not work (Just a point to ponder  I cannot remember her breed so if she it too big to carry in the kennel then maybe a lock will not work...better he can get her out in case of emergencies.) The panties will not keep a determined dog away....i have know dogs to rip them off!! Can you get junior looked after in daycare while you work?

No I'm gone to long he has to be able to let them out. He lets Moose and T-Bone out together (both girls) and then puts Junior out by himself.
Moose goes straight back into the kennel- don't want him dealing with putting her panties on cause then he wouldn't stay downstairs to watch them.

Moose is a 9 month old great dane/pit stands about 26" at the shoulder last time I measured and Junior is a boston terrier. I can't put Junior in daycare his last sets
of shots were when he was 9 yrs old and he's now 12 1/2 yrs old, they require up to date shots. Not giving him shots any more.

Junior is loose during the day and she is kenneled- At night we switch them around I leave Moose out and kennel Junior. When we are home they
are both loose of course she has her draws on lol and if I need to leave the room Junior is kenneled or leashed to me. Hubby doesn't feel we need
to kennel Junior as well, as long as one is kenneled when no one is around is good. Or I might start just putting the baby gate up and keeping Junior
in the front porch have not decided yet.

I told him he must keep him away from her at all times, he doesn't no that she's not in standing yet- so better to practice it from the get go lol
Plus told him if he messes up he would be paying to get rid of the babies cause she is way to young and not ever planning on breeding her. That def
makes him be more careful cause well he doesn't want to waste his money lol He has been very good! Very happy with that.

A couple more heats and she's off to get spayed at 2-3 yrs old. :-) More for my convenience then hers.
