branched from very old thread

hi i am hoping to get a staff cross boxer and it will be ready to pick up in march but people keep going on that this sort of dog isnt any good with small children because of its lock jaw please could you let me know wether you agree or not because i have fallen in love with this dog but the saftey of my children come first

the breeds mentioned are 2 of the very best breeds with children(and indeed big people too).there is no such thing as a dog having a lockjaw the bull breeds (and many other breeds) tend to hold on to what they grip thats all.

Hi
why not have a staff or a boxer-when you cross 2 breeds the offspring can inherit the worst or the best traits form either breed and theres no way of knowing untill these traits show themselves in later life.JMHO.The parents of cross breeds are not going to have been health checked either and so you risk the pup inheriting any health problems for example heart problems from the boxer.

Hi

I've got a Staffie - and she's fantastic with kids. She's a proper "nanny" dog.
If I were you, I'd stick with one or t'other - and I'd also go for the smaller one to avoid younger children being sent flying (I have a 5 month old Great Dane who really *tries* to be gentle, but needs wing mirrors to avoid sending even grown adults flying!)

Staffys are brilliant with kids
Mine loves ALL kids - big or small ( mine and strangers)
As said before you never quite know what you can inherit ( healthwise and temperament wise) with mixed breeds .
I have no experience of boxers I'm afraid so i cannot say

Hi Lel - mines a rescue staffy ... i don't even know how old she is, but she's just like a little old lady - looking after the family and watching out for the kids. Would love a male puppy though, theres one that goes up the school called Spike - 5 months old and just gorgeous.

I have no experience of boxers either, but size and power plus boisterous nature would make me nervous around my 3 year old.

I think I would prefer to have as much info as possible if I was to bring a dog into the household with kiddies . You cant take the chance . I know there are people out there with mixed breeds who would say that their dog is great but it is better to be sure beforehand.
My little Staffy (Gus )is just 13 weeks old and he's a real gem
Our last dog was a Staffy and he was just BRILLIANT with kids and a real softy - so wehn we decided we were ready for another dog , although we thought of a number of breeds the Staffy just won hands down purely because he had everything we were looking for in a dog .
Ijust love them

I agree completely. I went to look for a rescue dog - specifically a staffy as we had had them in the family before. When I saw Sox she was thin, with bad skin... we thought she was about 2 (but she looked 3 times that!). She didn't even have a name :( she'd been thrown out.
But even after being in the kennels for 3 weeks she was delighted to see us...I took the kids in to see her and see what she was like if I gave her a bone and took it away etc..and she was as good as gold.

Now she goes to work with my husband every day (he's a soldier), and she wears a Union Jack coat when its cold and *everyone* loves her :)

everyone talks of the staffy side ..I had a boxer about 30 yrs ago(well my parents did :) ) when I was one year old and I used to stand on him he would lie there to be my stool to reach the sink !!...and if I got the post over the gate he would protect me..he was the calmest most gentle thing I ever knew..my aunt was a boxer breeder and from what I know of them they are very playful into adulthood..a thing to watch with small kids...

I think both breeds can be quite boisterous so if you do decide to get the dog it will need lots of training and discipline .
Although i've never owned one myself the boxers I know are quite "bouncy" ( cant think of a better word at the mo) and Staffys are very strong .
Did you say this was a dog or a pup ?

I might have sounded a bit confusing I happened to have a very calm boxer growing up .But when we bought this house we are in now the people had a beautiful red one he was over 1 and they had to hold him the whole time we were here or put him in the kitchen ..then he'd attack the door some of the house we had to repair from his jumping and eating ..he was sooooooooooo happy to see us that was all..he just wanted to play..this is how I know the average boxer to be...my small kids were taken aback by this as they are short as is...but I guess it is different owning one they must calm down sometime...suprised we have no boxer owners on here with kids...to hear their side ! :)also we went to see some staffie pups a couple months ago as the hubby wanted one and the parents were all over us with excitement..depends on what you want from a dog and if you know all the sides going into it ..hate when I see all the ads for jack russels after people can't handle their ways! that's sad...

I've had Boxers, and I now own Staffies ,I think you have made an excellent choice.
I had boxers in the house when my two kids were born, my usually bouncy, carazy dogs were as gentle as lambs with my babies, the kids would use them as pillows and sleep in a big mixed up heap.
Now we have Staffies, and my grandson and they are inseperable, they are gentle and patient, and extremely loving, the only danger he is in, is being licked to death.
good luck,
You are extremely lucky.
