Does anyone know the KC policy for taking photographs at shows particularly whilst judging is taking place?

Is there a difference between shows where the public are charged an entry fee and where there is free entry for all i.e. it is a 'public place'

Is there anything in the Red Book?

I think it may depend on the show? If you look in a schedule it will say the policy about it for that show.
This is from the SKC Aug schedule:
PHOTOGRAPHY AND FILMING: The taking of photographs in the exhibition premises for sale or reward is strictly
prohibited except with the written permission of the Organisers. The Organisers reserve the right at their absolute
discretion to confiscate cameras and/or films for infringement of this condition. There is no objection to the general
public taking photographs or video film of general views of the Show, provided that these are for private use only.
Specific dogs may be photographed only with the approval of the exhibitor.
No photography or filming is permitted in breed judging rings whilst judging is actually taking place. However, judges
may allow it to happen at the end of classes or after the Challenge Certiticate is awarded.
Filming and flash photography is allowed from outside the rings at all times unless the operation of the camera is
actually affecting exhibits. However, if a powerful flash unit is used or it is clear that exhibits are being affected, a
ring steward or the Judge is empowered to stop the person concerned.
Cinematograph or television equipment may only be used at the Show if a permit has been issued by the Organisers.
There are also certain restrictions on the use of cameras for still photography and private video films.

A few months back at a breed club show (where normally anyone can & does take photos) the ring steward told me off for taking photos, these were of my own dog being handled by his breeder who knew i was taking them, there was no flash or anything to disract other dogs. However it was just a few days before the PDE 2 was due to air so i think the club was covering their back incase JH was about.

I took pics of friends dogs at Crufts and no one said anything, there were lots of folk with very serious looking cameras also taking pics.

My friend and I took her bitch who had won her class into an empty ring and had a photo session there too.

To be honest I have never seen an official photographer at a show, they must be there or we wouldn't get the win pics in the dog press or folks web sites.

My understanding was that photography is permitted at any event open to the general public, providing it's not for commercial use?

I frequently bring my camera to shows and take photos, have never had anyone say anything. We also did the same with one of the empty rings at Crufts. Could understand limiting flash photography because it's distracting for the dogs and handlers. Someone from the club running the show must do official photos, but I suppose anyone could really take a win photo if they wanted to.

The rules are as Gemma86 stated. If you want to photograph a dog that isn't yours, you must get permission from the owner first if you are a private individual and not a photographer. In reality I dare say very few people would object -but then again in this day and age owners of certain breeds may well worry the photographer was JH........!

Isn't that just for that particular show though? They might have a bit more control over it if the public is charged a fee to attend the show, but my understanding has always been that photography for personal use is permitted (without having to ask for consent) at public events. Had a look at some other schedules and didn't find anything about photography... could very well have missed it though.

As far as I know anyone is allowed to take photographs for personal use at public events.

It says exactly the same for Leeds, Paignton, Bournemouth, WKC, City of Birmingham, Darlington, Belfast, Midland Counties and then I gave up looking through more schedules. :) I CANNOT find the rule in the red book BUT mine is one year out of date, and seeing as all the schedules state "The organisers would like to bring the regulation on photography and filming to the attention of the exhibitors, trade stands, press and visitors" it certainly makes it sound like there is one rule for all.

Again, might be a rule that can only apply to shows where the public have to pay a fee to get in? Couldn't find anything about it on schedules for Open shows that I looked at, but might have missed something.

No, not all the above shows charge people to get in.
