Looking for correct or at least approximate pronunciation for

Luch and ratan. Bit confused as to which language they are

TIA :-D

I think luch is a mouse/vole/shrew type of animal and ratan I've never heard of!

I know they mean mouse and rat but want to know how to pronounce them :-)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 17.07.12 18:02 UTC
Using this site I think 'luch' is pronounced as 'luck' but with the soft ending of loch as opposed to lock; and 'ratan' is 'raddan'.

Thanks Jan :-) I googled but couldn't find anything as helpful

Are we talking scottish gaelic.. or irish gaelic - lots of similarities but different pronunciation.
- By Cava14Una Date 19.07.12 19:13 UTC
It would have been either or both but have changed mind about using them as names. I thought it would be funny to call the kitten I'm getting one or the other but to be honest I'm not keen on the pronunciation.

I couldn't help but laugh when I saw this thread. My young bitch is C***** Gaidligh Samhradh at K*******. Her grandmother is Nodiwr Yr Helwriaeth of C*****. Right tongue twisters... ;-)

I will NOT be giving any of my future pups names that cannot be pronounced at first glance :-)

Small world LindyLou my kitten is coming from someone who has Munsterlanders :-)

She wouldn't live between Dundee and Perth would she?? :-)

Thought you might know who I mean

I think I know the breed, but it has American origins despite being named after a place in Scotland. So if that was your plan, why not look for names with the same meaning in other languages? I am sure Google Translate can some up with something but for starters, Firân [fee-rAhn] is rat in Arabic; Nezumi is - I think - mouse in Japanese, and the Thai for mouse is Noo, rat is Noo Yai [=big mouse].

What about names connected to the place Selkirk ?.
I know Selkirk very well i stay there rather a lot, off the top of my head there's.

Souter - local term for someone born in Selkirk
Muckle Moo'd Meg ( possibly not lol )
Tibbie Tamson - local witch
Mungo Park - explorer
Reiver - cattle raiders
Walter Scott - used to be Sheriff of Selkirk
Ettrick & Yarrow - the two valleys below Selkirk.

Your very lucky getting a Selkirk, their very high on my list for my next cat.

Apparently they originate from a place in America named Selkirk - not from the original place in Scotland... Dunno if that makes a difference?

Not to me !, it was their nature and looks that got me interested, it was just a funny quirk that they have the same name as a place I love :-)

The cat I am looking for a name for is a wee black and white moggy :-)

Ooh, I used to live just outside Selkirk for a while. Lovely area. I decided years ago if I ever gor a border terrier I'd call it Reiver. :-)
