Topic Dog Boards / Health / LC Chihuahua pup itching , skin looks fine
- By Cani1 [gb] Date 16.07.12 13:17 UTC
I'm posting on behalf of my Nan , she has a long coat chihuahua pup , now 13 weeks she has had him 3 weeks now. He has itched from getting him , no sign of fleas , he's been frontlined , his skin looks lovely , vet checked him over and said she couldn't see why he would be scratching .
He was supposed to of been wormed before leaving with panacur 10% so he shouldn't have worms , but I was thinking to myself could he be itching because he has worms , he has been dragging his bum a little as well.
If anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated.

Maybe get a skin scrape for mites? or it could be an allergy to the washing powder or floor cleaner she uses? Dragging his bum could be anal gland, worms, or just a bit of poo stuck to his fluff, it wouldn't usually make him itchy though.

food intolerance ?

Could be , thanks for your suggestions both of you.
I will recommend she tries changing his food to wheat and gluten free , he is not liking the Royal Canin that he is on anyway.
:)

Issues with anal glands? That will cause bum-scooting, and if my memory serves me right, can also cause itching?

Will get the vet to take a look when he has his final injection :)

Well I have a houseful of Long Coats, and I've never seen itching on the breed, so would be asking the vet to look further, or, as suggested, try a change of food.  If he's already on dry food, how about trying him on Fish4Puppies?  Their customer service is excellent, so I'm sure they would send you a sample if you phone them.

I don't think anal glands are likely to be the cause as the puppy is only 13 weeks old so not likely that they are active yet.

You're right.... what do you think the bum scooting is though, if not worms?

Could be but I suppose if the poor thing is generally itchy the bum scooting could be part of the general scratching.
