Hi, how reliable are the DNA tests that identify the breed if your dog? Have any of you had it done? How much is it. Thank you.

No personal experience but from what I have heard not very good on cross-breeds.

If your dog is a particular breed not sure why you would want this done, explain please.

The ones ive hurd of are ment to tell the breeds in a cross, a dog mag did a review on one company and sent in a smaple fomr a known cross breed and it came back wrong and a sample form a pedigree dog and it came back as a cross between a few breds. The company said the test is only ment for cross breds not pedigree and they also said they dont have every uk reconised dog breed in there system so if a dog has that in it it will give the closest breed apperantly.

Could she just not be a great example of a pug? You could post a link to a pic of her if you upload one to a photohosting site, theres some pug owners and breder who may be able to give you advice.

DNA tests are a waste of time, at present at least.  At least one company says they can't identify pure bred - well, if they can't identify the pure breeds, then they can't identify crosses of them.  No two ways about it - it doesn't matter if they intended for cross breeds, the company must be able to identify the parents breeds or the whole thing is pointless.

Just had this discussion on a US breed list, there was a list of shelter dogs with supposed breeding of them and some of the purported breeds ion the mixes were very unlikely to impossible, especially some of the unusual ones.

Lets face it most crosses are likely to be of common breeds in the area, most often ones that have more opportunity to roam, so often farm or hunting dogs come into the mix.

I know someone who tested their collie x grey lurcher and it came back with chihuahua in it! I think DNA tests are only good for proving parentage between 2 possible sires say or like Silken Windhounds do where very single one is DNA verified. They don't seem very reliable to just find out which breeds are in a dog.

As for how much it is, click here

Didn't Gwen say at the time it could be a poorly bred Pug?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 15.07.12 19:02 UTC
The only point would be if the pup was misrepresented as purebred and clearly was not then the poster would have grounds to claim against the seller for misrepresentation.  the pup came from a well known multi breed and cross breed commercial kennels.

Ive seen some US websites where the crosse don't look anything like the dogs the DNA test said they were. One even said swd couldnt see anything in it that wd make me think it was.

I got one from amazon and it came back with my irish bred beagle type being a 50% beagle, 25% foxhound and 25% mixed breed - the mixed breed bit is pie in the sky as it includes mainly spitz and fluffy she certainly is not lol but the beagle and foxhound you can clearly see without any shadow of a doubt.  She may as has previously been suggested be a Kerry Beagle but she is undeniably beagle and the foxhound is also pretty evident.  All speculation to her breed has gone along those lines previously
