Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Ok to eat grass ?

My girl has been trying to eat the grass this morning and has brought a bit up with a frothy sick, im presuming its morning sickness. My question is should I leave her or should I be stopping her from trying to eat the grass?

Mine eat grass all the time, dogs know what is good for them if thier tummies are a bit off. I would let her carry on as long as it is not obsessive.

Totally normal for a dog to eat grass, sometimes they just eat it and at others it is to assist in the clearing of the stomach I find mine do it in the morning when the stomach is empty and there is an amount of bile to get rid of.

I knew that they do eat grass if they have an upset tummy but wasnt sure if it was ok for a pregnant dog to eat grass :) thanks everyone x

I have taught my dogs not to , as where we used to live the councils sprayed a white weed killer .....the verges on the fields where we live now pick up  farmers sprays . In well used dog areas other dogs mark it ..yuk. Upset tums  - I give a tsp of natural yogurt and honey ..am and pm ...

Shes only been doing it in our own garden so no chance of any chemicals x

Just an upset tum then , but it can become a habit as another poster has mentioned.

if it is morning sickness then she could very well be eating it to help her be sick, our little girl eats it all the time but never sick.x

We have a lovely field where our dogs run around in twice a day, it is a lovely natural grass ley with meadow grasses and herbs. My dogs spend a lot of time choosing which variety of grass and herbs they are going to pick and eat and they are never "sick".
I would never stop my dogs from eating grass or herbs, they know which is good and what is needed.
They also love to go blackberry picking in the autunm, they look and pick for themselves but if some are too high I will do the job for them. No other dogs can get into the field.

Mine also help themselves from anything they find in the field, not just grass, herbs and blackberries but also rose hips, plumbs and those mini cherry things they also dig up roots but I don't know what they are. I certainly would not try to stop them as it is natural for dogs to do this and sometimes the grazing makes them sick and sometimes it does not but it does seem to be different grass chosen by them for the purpose they desire.

wee man and nova thats just what my dogs do i dont tell them i let them eat as they know what they need :) ...and if they eat some grass that makes them sick then they need it! x

When they eat to induce vomit it is either to rid the stomach of bile or to remove an over large item like a potato or sock :-) otherwise they seem to eat because they like it or their system needs it - don't know which but the are opportunity eaters and they do seem to enjoy finding food for them selves.

I've never worried about my dogs eating grass. However, a few weeks ago Bramble brought up a 'sausage' of grass around 6 inches long - must have been sitting in his oesophagus all night :( He seemed perfectly fine afterwards, but I've never seen one of the dogs bring up a lump of grass like this before :(
