Has anyone hired the Rug Doctor carpet cleaner from B&Q? feedback either good or bad appreciated before I hire it to clean my carpets :-)

Ditto, was considering it myself

I hired it when my partner moved in with me, and we did his house, a few of mums rooms, a few of his parents rooms and a few of my rooms.
One being the large living room/dining room that had a patio door that went straight out onto grass for a long time and 3 dogs running in and out alot of the time. Hadnt been cleaned for 4 years, and WOW the difference, Got it back to the colour the carpet was under the furniture, and it was a light greenie colour :) :)
So I would truely recommend it ) :)
It does take ages to do as you need to go slowely to get a good finish, and maybe go over it twice and if you ara not used to physical work then you will need numerous breaks, but we did the 4 houses in a weekend and that was including coffee, travelling etc and only cost us about £40 :) :)

Great thanks :-) I only have my front room/stairs & landing carpeted and although we don't use the front room often when the odd dogs gets allowed in to say hello to visitors etc they love to carpet swim :-) so it needs cleaning now.
Did you have to book it? or can we just go to our local B&Q and get it there and then? I know we need 2 forms of ID.

I would book it if its a specific weekend as they dont have many in normally. I got mine from the local dry cleaners who are the agents, but they should operate all the same.
You need to give a deposit as well that is given back when you return it :)

ok I will give them a call, I would like to do it next week end as we have no shows :-@ which is rare during the "summer" months ;-)

I hired one a few months ago. No complaints about how well it cleaned, but the carpet took far longer to dry than it says in all the adverts.

OK big question. I have an unused upstairs room which one of my dogs got into and peed on the carpet. Not knowing it was there, it was some time before it was discovered and it has stained quite bad. I was thinking of having to re carpet but would this get it out, do you think?
- By Lea Date 12.07.12 10:53 UTC
There were a few places where my old dog had been sick at the end of her life and was stained. Think we put the stuff on neat and then used it and it got it out so hopefully :) :)

I've used it and wasn't loving it. It cleaned to a certain degree, didn't remove pet stains though. As someone else has said it took days to dry, they were left sopping wet!! I've used a professional cleaner and tbh the difference was better and worth the money and the carpets are steamed and are dry in a short period of time...

I've used rug doctor professionally and didn't like it as it left marks on the carpet, I prefer any of the karcher types that you get from the dry cleaners or hire shops etc. They are less cumbersome to use, lighter and faster too ( look more like a cylinder vacuum cleaner)- you can go over it as quick as you like, the water is easy to change and it seems to suck up more water, though it does leave the carpet damp to touch ( you can always go over it a few more times) but dries quite quickly especially with the heating on! ;-)

Again, you need to book it, 2 forms of I.D and a deposit. I have found getting it from the dry cleaners as being more reliable as it always seems to be there when I need it! :-)

To be recommended imo I have hired it a number of times

Probably from the same dry cleaners, FF! ;-)

I hired one from tesco, must say I was impressed with it. Did my car seats and the roof lining and it came up really clean. Did the stair carpet and the bedrooms as well with good results. I must admit it is a bit cumbersome though. Didn't take long for everything to dry out either.I would use one again as it does do the job properly.

Thanks all, I think I will give it a go. :-)

Not sure if you have a steam mop or not (We'd be lost without ours with Nando) but we bought a fairly cheap carpet cleaner extension for it that gets out stains really well.

OP, if you are only doing a couple of rooms I would suggest getting professional cleaners in to do it.  I used to get 3 bedrooms, landing and stairs done for around £40.  Someone else does the hard work and I come home to clean, dry carpets - perfect!

Have a look on your local gumtree for one man businesses who will offer good deals.

more than likely :) kc

Wow, when was that? A professional offered to do my small hallway at mates' rates of only £35 ....

If it is a fairly small area try Vanish Carpet cleaner liquid. You make up a solution and foam it up with a sponge. You just use the foam and scrub it in, let it dry and then vacume off. I had some urine stains on my landing and it has got rid of them. The first time I did it there was a big improvement but the stain had not completely gone, so I went over the area again and the second go cleared them completely.
Can't remember how much I paid but it wasn't very much think I either bought it at the Pound Shop or B & M Bargain store, but one bottle diluted as per instructions will do quite a large area.

I have in the past tried the Vanish Foam in the spray can but it was not as effective as the liquid.

Morrisons Supermarkets supply Rug Doctors as well but I have never used them myself. If you are going to get a firm make sure you get a proper price upfront, I have heard that they put very low prices in adverts just to get through the door and then hit you with lots of extras.

When I wanted the carpets done I hired a man and found it just a little more expensive than hiring a machine. If you factor in the time it was much the same. He had a big Professional machine with a big capacity. He also got down and scrubbed out spots manually. Worth every penny!
my man is also the window cleaner and chimney sweep.

I had it done professionally 2 years ago and it cost me £80 then just to do the front room and hall (hall is now wood) and TBH I wasn't 100% happy so wanted to see about hiring something for a weekend and do it a few times.

I hired someone recently who was advertising on FB. It was quite cheap (think something like £30 for two rooms) but although they did smell lovely after he left, the stains came back as soon as the carpet was dry so not much use really.

The last time was 6 months ago just before I moved but I have been using him for years.  Like I said in a previous post it worth checking gumtree for the one man and machine operators that can't afford to have adverts in yellow pages or on yell each year.

He used to also drag his stuff up the stairs to a 3rd floor one bed flat when I lived there.  I can't speak highly enough of him so anyone in the Dundee/Angus/Perth area who wants his details, drop me a PM
