Topic Dog Boards / General / Additional excess when dogs get older with insurance

Hi All

Just wondering if any of you can help me here, got my new halifax policy through last week and just wanted to check with others whose dogs are insured as to what age there insurance adds an additional percentage on, halifax have said that dogs over 6yrs old you then have to pay an additional 20% of the bill aswell as the excess, this seems very young to me but i am not sure what age other insurance companies put this into there contracts.
Hope you can help me here with some news

The ones I have seen its usually 8 or 9

I've just checked my AXA insurance for Hamish who is over 12, and I still pay the same excess as I do for the youngsters which is £75 per condition. There appears to be no extra percentage added at all. I am paying £66 a month for him but he does have ongoing conditions and medication which I claim back so with him I'm still quids in.

More Than have similar, but I think it's 8 or 9 before it goes up to excess plus 20% of claim
prior to this it's excess plus 10% it seems to becoming the norm with pet insurances alot of them are doing this now

Sadly I think it will get to a situation soon when we won't be able to afford to insure our dogs.

We are with pet plan for all ours and my 10 years olds excess went up to 20% this year at renewal .

Thanks i thought petplan was 10 yrs old but wasn't sure, i think 6yrs old is a bit young to start adding another percentage on but as you all say i think in time all insurers will start with this as vet bills are going up each year and there are so many dogs with ongoing problems now.
Thanks for all your replies though

Soli was with Petplan and they added a 20% excess on top when she'd turned 10.

Animal Friends is 8 - their normal excess goes up to £99 (if the buyer doesn't set it to that to start with, I start on £69) and they ask for a whopping 35% as well!  If not for the low premiums I'd go elsewhere as it is very steep IMO for an 8yr old, but Paige has a few ongoings now so can't move.

Glad you pointed that out about Animal Friends, Nikita. I think I will change when it comes to renewal of Nando's policy. We've never claimed but not heard great things about them so far. Why is it that you never hear of anything bad of a company until you've paid them for something? LOL

We're already at that stage Pedlee! We put aside money each month into a 'virtual account' from which all vet bills are paid. Been doing it about a year and have saved vast amounts on premiums, even with new puppy vaccinations, boosters, grass seeds, skin problems etc to pay out. I know there could be some major op round the corner, but most insurances have a ceiling beyond which they won't pay anyway, so we're no better off really with 4 to finance.

Petplan add 20 per cent on select breeds at the age of 6. I recently changed to John Lewis who add on the 20 per cent at 9 yrs on a select breed.

Hi All

Those of you with petplan do they hike there prices up rapidly the older the dog gets, i know the 20% excess comes in at 10yrs old but just wondered if the annual premium goes up a lot with age, Halifax have offered to re-instate the policies or give us 3X the last years claims that comes to just over £4000 i know this isn't a lot but i am trying to work out whether staying with petplan who i insured him with when halifax pulled out last year even though they won't cover his skin condition or anything relating to this is more worth it than taking the chance and accepting the new halifax policy with the 20% excess at 6yrs old and hoping they won't put the premiums right up high after next year and try and get out of insuring but doing it the legal way this time. A lot of postings on facebook re halifax and lloyds insurance seems that people are thinking halifax will do this and put insurance out of the customers reach without getting heavily fined for it, i spoke to a lady at the FSO yesterday and she said there is a high chance they may do this as there is nothing legally that can be done about this if they do. Its a hard decision to make and since halifax pulled out robbie has since gone down the dry eye for which petplan have luckily covered and not quibbed on so i need to make sure i make the right decision long term

Just renewed 2 of mine with pet plan - 6 year old non select breed was 664 this year for 12K cover (cost 8K vet fees last year ) last years premium for this dog age 5 was £577
9 year old was £736 for this year again on 12K cover - last year premium was also 557 so his went up more I am assuming due to age - however as my poor dogs had appalling luck last year he also cost 7.5 K in vet fees :(((
Shows that premium has gone up based on age not claims amount - I will probably continue on this level of cover - its a huge amount of money but worth it for the peace of mind and also I could not have afforded the massive bills last year without it ( altho the care and treatment they both got was worth every penny and I am so grateful to have them both fit and well now)
I have not looked to see what the premiums for the others are as filed in the general chaos but hope this gives you a bit of an idea .

Red Dog, what size dogs are you insuring as my dogs only cost around £298 per year with Pet Plan and that is with the highest cover for life ( terrier size)
