Topic Dog Boards / Showing / First Show AND Ringcraft!!

We have been looking at showing our Frenchie (still not too sure if she is "show" material) and are going along to a ringcraft class this week for the first time. Not sure what exactly I need or even what to wear? Any help here?

Also the breeder we got our girl from has said we should enter the Scottish Championship Show in August (closing date 17/07) She feels our girl looks the right conformation, feels great and has a good temperament, but she is still really puppyish, such as licking and sometimes jumps if people talk to her in that "baby" voice.
We have practised her standing and walking on the show lead and she loves it, but after about 5-10 minutes of her standing perfect she just sits?! She will stand again when prompted though.

So I'm looking for advice as to what to expect and how to hold it together so to speak.

The main thing you need for ringcraft is lots of really nice treats that your dog loves -forget boring shop bought ones, think liver, sausage, cheese, anything like that. It's also good to practice with the showlead you will be using for shows as it would normally be different to the normal lead, so treats and showlead are the two things I'd bring.

I think MOST dogs, no matter how experienced, will get bored after 10 minutes of standing. :) You don't often have to stand still for so long in the ring. You will need the stand when the judge looks over the entire class at the beginning, when it is your turn to be judged, and when everyone in the class has been seen and the judge is about to pick their placings, but in between, when he or she is looking at other dogs, relax your dog, give treats, have some fun. :)

I tried cheese but it always goes that weird kind of way and sticks together, but sausages are her favourite. I practice with her showlead, may sound strange but it's as if she can tell the difference between them. She gets really excited and runs around like crazy when I get her normal lead out and just comes and stands next to me when I get the showlead out.

Thanks I'm mostly wanting to go for fun and experience, if she ever gets placed then it's a bonus! :)

Can you leave the cheese out to go hard?

Dogs can definitely tell the difference between a show lead and a regular lead. Or the difference between collars, if you do obedience. As others have said, keep it light and fun. She's just a baby so nobody is expecting her to be perfect. Most dogs will get bored/tired of being asked to stand for a long time, so teaching her some tricks to do in the ring is a good way to pass the time while waiting in a larger class.

Dehydrating the sausage is always an option if it's too messy, but there's no harm in using it if she really likes it.

Ours certainly know the difference between show set and ordinary lead.  Have fun at ringcraft, don't overdo it in case puppy gets bored. Good luck.

Have a bash at liver cake. Don't over do it keep it fun. My boy now hates the ring and never really enjoyed it. Have fun and watch others more than worrying about your girl. How is she bred?
