Hi

If you are put on a waiting list to get a puppy from a litter, how likely is it that you will actually get a puppy?

Thanks

Sally

Hi Sally,

Loads of factors:

How high are you on the waiting list?
What does the breeder intend to keep?
Have you specified male or female?
Do you want a particular colour in a possibly multi-coloured litter?
What breed of dog/what size of litter do they normally have?

So, answer is possibly of the 'how long is a piece of string' variety! If you're waiting for an Irish Setter or Rottweiler, with large litters and no colour variations, chances are good - if you're waiting for a female rough-coated Griffon Bruxellois, not so good!! Suspect you'll be somewhere in between.

Hi Sally ..as far as I know , it is dependant on a lot of different factors ..whether you want a bitch or a dog and how many of each are born , whether you want a pet or potential show pup , how many are actually born , how far up the list you are etc etc

:)

I always tell people where they are on the list, say second in line for a dog/bitch, third and so on. I do say that if there is a particularly promising pup I may let it go to a person who wants to show. If I have more than 3 enquiries for wither sex, I point out that they may be unlucky, would they be OK with other sex, or reassure them that I will put them onto another breeder who may be in a position to help them.

In our numerically small bred we all know who is having pups, and will swap enquiries if one has all one sex and someone the other and so on.

What the other have said is quite true.

Hi Guest

I got my puppy 6 months ago and I was on a waiting list. I was third in line for a gold dog (cocker). When the pups were born there were 2 gold dogs, 5 black dogs and 1 black bitch. I thought I was going to have to wait a while longer but, lucky for me, someone backed out at the last minute. If I had wanted a bitch I would have had no chance as the breeder was keeping the only one in the litter. I suppose it depends a lot on whether you are dead set on a particular colour/sex. Also, I don't suppose breeders want to 'promise' anyone a pup in case something goes wrong.

Just thought I'd let you know that you won't neccessarily be on a list for a very long time.

Like the others mine are allocated on a first come first served basis. With the ESS as they are all the same colour then they just get separated into who wants which sex. They are told where they are on the list and also informed that they must let me know if they get a pup from another source .I think it's only fair as there are so many waiting some will obvoiusly look for pups elsewhere
With the CKCS its different as there are different colours involved it's a bit more complicated and there are also less pups in the litter so the waiting list is likely to be longer
