My old girl Polly, although being short haired, is a really heavy moulter, just about all year, would something like salmon oil help ?
The problem isn't the moulting itself, but the hairballs, I'm going through a tube of Katalax nearly every week, it's expensive, and Polly hates it.
She also gets brushed every day.

The first thing I'd look at would be the food as it is amazing how the wrong food for the individual (i.e. what can be right for one can be wrong for another) can make a huge difference.

At the moment she gets Orijen kibble and Purina Gourmet wet food. She has access to food all day, she's always been a picky eater and never over eats.
Is there a food you think would be better ?, she doesn't seem to mind the same kibble all the time, but she goes off wet food after a few weeks and I have to change it.

My ragdoll is a very picky eater but eats royal canin indoor longhair which I believe contains something to reduce hair balls (he certainly never suffers from them even though he moults terribly twice a year)-perhaps a food for long haired cats would be better? Ted takes good care of his own coat but loves to be groomed so I guess my removal of loose hair reduces the amount he ingests in his case anyway.

One of mine was an incredibly heavy moulter, I found the furminator helped a lot and also I would put a bit of vaseline down her leg so it sort of coated the hairs as she licked them to make them pass easier - may be a old wives tail but worth a try

Have you thought about a hairball food like Royal Canin?  Or the Hair & Skin food?

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll give the hairball kibble a go, is there any difference in the effectiveness of the different brands ?.

I don't know, mine love Royal Canin so that's what I go by!

I was looking at this just today Celli - one of my cats (ragdolls) keeps coughing up hairballs but I can't work out which one it is as they never do it when I'm there. I got some whiskas anti-hairball treats today as I saw them in PAH so I'll see if that helps and if not then I will be trying the anti- hairball food too. Mine are on IAMs but will only eat the chicken one. IAM's do a hairball one but i would need to introduce it gradually I think as they are a bit fussy. PAH have an own brand one too I noticed today.

For many years now we have fed a tin of Sainsbury's Portuguese Sardines in Sunflower oil, one day a week. Any furballs that have built up are easily expelled. One word of caution though: Sainsbury's in their wisdom have now introduced an almost identically coloured tin containing CHILLI with this product! My cat was not amused when I tried to feed him this instead of the normal one, so as they say - always read the label :)
