Hi

We are going to breed our large breed bitch this season (in progress) does anyone know if there is insurance to cover a pregnancy and is it worth getting or should we just deal with the vet bill if and when it occurs?

Thanks

Claire

I think you have to sign up for a few months before mating to get the full cover.

The KC breeding insurance scheme changed about 12 months ago . You now have to take out the policy 6 months before you plan to breed. Also, it is an 'add on'  to their more expensive Healthcare plan, as opposed to the cheaper Essential policy. Yes, it used to be extremely generous. You could take out a breeding policy around the time you planned to mate the girl and then cancel once the puppies were born and had left the nest. It covered the puppies too ! I can understand why they changed the rules. It was just too generous

I don't know why the other insurance companies can't do a pregnancy cover as an optional extra. I'd be quite happy to pay extra to have at least some level of cover for pregnancy problems.

I know some companies do cover pregnancy but they are expensive. I don't remember them being something you could add on when you wanted to breed. It was a set amount per year for insuring a breeding bitch and this was every year whether you were actually breeding that year or not.

I tried to get my bitch insured for breeding with the kennel club, who she is already covered by. they said that i needed to have her insured for 12 weeks before  the insurance was valid!
given that the pregnancy lasts 9 weeks how are you supposed to work that out? they get 35 quid a month from me! my bitch's seasons were so irregular that i couldn't predict with any certainty when she would go into season so i could mate her , there is no way i could ever sort breeders insurance out!
