I'd like to ask contributors to the board what techniques they use for teaching their dogs to STAND and what are their personal reasons for using this specific technique (this may be because you physically struggle with another, or it has implications for future training - ie obedience work requiring a high level of accuracy).

Admin: we would like to keep this thread as your techniques and NOT for debate. If you would like to debate ANY issue raised in this thread, please start another thread headed Stand - Debate

I'm still working on this:
1) I have had them in a sit and I put a treat in front of their nose and pull it away and at the same time I tell them stand.

2) I have also had them in a sit and put my hand under their belly and made them stand and at the same time I say stand.

So far I'm getting there with Junior I have not done this yet with my other dogs. I'm looking forward to read the other posts to get some good advice.
ttfn :)

Well at ringcraft to get Saskia (husky) to stand and kneel down as she is still a pupplace one hand near her groin and apply gentle pressure on it so that she can not sit.............. with the other hand I hold her lead and tell her to S T A N D .................it works when she feels like it :)

I use a variety of methods for training and reinforcing the stand depending on the circumstances and the particular dog!
For training a dog to stand as part of an on lead heelwork routine I would either halt and give the command 'stand' at the same time reaching my left hand down and holding the dog under its belly not only 'up' if it is trying to sit but also straight and next to my left leg. Then gentle praise! Some dogs don't like hands on for whatever reason and may snap or wriggle about or hurl themselves onto their backs so for that I would change to halt and give the command 'stand' at the same time I would raise the lower half of my left leg putting my foot under the dogs belly preventing it from being able to sit! Again - gentle praise!
If the dog does manage to sit or is not standing correctly where you want them to then just take a step forward or two and repeat. The dog will stand up to walk with you then you can start again!
To train the dog to stand on command I would have the dog in front of me on the lead. I would be RIGHT in front. Take a step backwards with your right leg, lean back and encourage the dog to its feet from either the sit or the down with the word 'stand'. Step forward with your right leg again into the dog. Then gentle praise. The reason I stand so close is to discourage the dog from walking forward 'creeping'. Do this several times until the dog is familiar with the command. In my opinion this is the hardest command to teach out of all the positions!
When your dog is familiar with the command you can begin increasing the distance you stand when giving the dog the command. An easy way of achieving this distant control without creeping forwards is to position the dog on a step or similar platform. An alternative is to use a toy placed behind the dog so it's less inclined to walk forward with it's 'reward' behind it - that's provided you have enough control to keep the dogs attention focused on you and your requirements foremost before being 'released' to enjoy its reward.
