Ok I know you all have probably been asked this before but whats the chances once a dog has mated and tied that the bitch actually becomes pregnant and whelps pups. I have been reading these forums and there are a lot of posts about phantoms, dogs missing, absorption ect.... but im thinking that this is because people post here when they have a problem mainly so therefore gives a false view on how many bitches actually have problems if you see what I mean. It probably I imagine worries people too read these forums and see 'so many problems' when in reality its more rare ? Am I waffling here lol. Anyway back to the original question. How likely after a tie is it they are pregnant ?

I havent taken offense White lilly, I know exactly what you mean. It seemed just the same when I was concieving my own children and I knew people gutted because they had accidently become pregnant. Although our bitches mating was completely accidental I did intend to breed on the next season. Things just happened a little sooner than expected thanks to 'helpful' kids. I am however now quite excited at the thought of an impending litter and would be secretly gutted now im used to the idea of her not being pregnant.

I had a bitch who had 4 phantoms, mated to the same stud twice and 2 different ones, found out she ovulated very early and decided to use my own male for one last attempt as I could do more matings rather than 400ml round trip to studs, day 39 3 pups seen on scan I was elated, she whelped 2 days early, 1 stillborn bitch and 2 partly decomposed pups, after experiences like this it makes me mad to read about puppy farms and BYB's churning out pups with no research,no health tests and minimal care before sending them off to an unsuspecting public.

The breeder of my dogs tried for 14 years with 3 different bitches and couldn't get them in whelp. She eventually used her own dog on her girl (previously missed with outside stud) and was successful. Sometimes it doesn't just happen no matter how much all is well planned.

Over the last 30 years I have had 15 litters, both BMD and GSD. I would say if you get a good tie whith the bitches wholhearted co-operation the chances are about 8 -2 in favour of a litter and then a 99% chance of that litter being a viable one. That is going on my own numbers, and some rounded up maths !!
Don't forget though the possible mortality rate after birth, over the years I have lost 3 pups after the first day. One the mother rejected ( Would not let it feed and it was weak and died the day after it was born) one had a deformed leg and was PTS and one was squashed right under my nose when Mum leapt into the box before I could grab her and stood on the pup. That was a particulary stressy GSD who never had another litter. I have only had 2 born that we could not get started.
That is from my very unreliable memory! ;-)

Did she have them in different rooms? :-)

I find that completely amazing. As Jean said it is VERY likely a bitch gets pregnant after a complete mating done on the correct day.

lol yes they were in the same room. The bitch my dogs are from is VERY fertile but she didn't take after being put to a proven stud, then AI was tried and she eventually went on to produce 3 litters to her in house stud one litter was 17 pups born 15 raised.

Poor dog. I would never resort to using AI, the whole point is to perpetuate dogs that can breed naturally and Dallies are hardly a rare breed where you might try something this desperate to keep the breed going.

It would have been pretty hard to mate with this dog naturally as he had been dead for quite a few years!! AI wasn't used because she was having difficulty.
