Topic Dog Boards / Health / Prozac for dogs
- By Jackman [gb] Date 04.07.12 11:14 UTC
Hi, I came across this article about someone medicating his unhappy dog: http://www.northraleighnews.com/2010/06/30/3266_my-dog-needs-prozac-and-it-drives.html

I wondered if anyone on here had experience of the same thing?
I'm a journalist looking for a case study of someone who had put their dog on prozac and wanted to see if anyone would be interested in being a case study for an article? I would be able to pay for the story.

If interested, you can contact me at jack.mckay@barcroftmedia.com or on 0845 370 2233.

Many thanks,
Jack

Ridiculous the poor dog was an oldie and wanted a quiet life rather than to be pumped ful of anti depressants.

I assume this is in the US.

Most oldie Labs I have ever had are quite happy to potter about ,eat food ( as much as they can scrounge) and tummy rubs and cudfles . Simple but happy existance.

There are actual canine medications available FAR safer and more suited than Prozac -such as Zylkene.

Appalling. Also because Prozac isn't licenced for dogs I don't believe it's legal in the UK, under the veterinary cascade system, to prescribe it. Certainly medicating without veterinary qualifications is illegal.

Clomicalm is a licenced veterinary drug that a vet can prescribe; perhaps you should do a story on that instead?

Perhaps he's just using the human brand name for it for a better journalistic impact (if you see what I mean)?  'Fluoxetine' doesn't have quite the same ring to it and would change the mood of the article I think, but everyone's heard of Prozac.

I'm not excusing him - I think it's ridiculous that he's done it, but then we don't know anything more about the situation than what he's written.

The original link is to an American site; the rules of medication are often different in different countries. What's legal in the US isn't always legal in the UK.
