I asked about crate training my pup earlier but I have left her in the kitchen so far (not a big mess in the am) and not locked her in as I was wondering about the weather..she is so small to go outside and it is so windy (she has had all her shots though). I was wondering if I left her till 4/5 months would this be giving her any bad ideas with training ?What do people do when their pup is so small in winter? PS last pup I did this with it was summer ..so sorry if I am clueless...

I paper trained mine in the winter (boston terrier's) and when the weather got warmer I started taking them out, watched them very close (house training all over), but they did catch on fast since they were older. Have never had a problem with doing it this way. Good luck

Hi Melmel,
I got my yorkie in December and started her outside right away. The day I brought her home, I took her right to the garden and she weed. She doesn't like the rain, but will do her business quickly and run back in. Paper training didn't work with her, she would just tear it up all over the kitchen. So I would have to wake up to the occasional wee on the floor. But I took her out at midnight, then up again at 6 to take her out. I would think if you train her to go on paper, you will have to retrain her when the weather gets warmer. Everyone on here helped me with housetraining and thats what they told me. [Either you paper train or train them to go outside. When you put paper down you are giving them the permission to wee in the house.] I haven't had any problems with my yorkie going outside because of the weather. It is very windy here today. She just goes and comes back in very quickly. Like you said, they are small, but I don't think it hurts them. Hope this will be some help. Shirl :D

thanks for the advice x2..I know they do say that putting the paper in the house puts ideas in their head ..glad to hear she won't blow away though :)
Will have to weigh the points and make a decision FAST !!!The thing with the crate is she likes to go in but does not like the door locked and she scratches to come out ( she wants me to sit in the living room all night with her) .I can't wait for her to get bigger and be able to go anywhere in the house without having to worry about her.
PS: Shirl you say you'd wake to an occassional wee how do you get them to wait at this age for you if they are not in a crate..mine wees it seems everytime she passes the paper ! :)

Melmel, Can you put her in the kitchen at night with the door shut? Thats what I do. She has room to roam. I just tell her time to go nightnight and turn on a night light for her. I don't shut her in her crate at night. It took a good 3 weeks before she didn't have anymore accidents at night. So she was around 13 weeks old then. I would just clean it up every morning and then spray that pet odor product down so she wouldn't go back to the same spot. She is 15 weeks now and hasn't had an accident at night for 2 weeks now. It takes a lot of time and patience I have found. As far as the crate goes, I put her bed right in front of the crate with the door open to get her use to it. She wouldn't even go in it. Little by little she started going in. I started out shutting her in the crate for 3 to 5 minutes each day, (like everyone told me on here). She would whine and scratch to get out. But I would go to another room so she wouldn't see me. She would soon settle down, then I would go and let her out and praise her for being a good girl. Now I can shut the door on the crate when needed. They do wee a lot at this age. I took Precious out every 1/2 hour to 45 minutes everyday. Now I take her out every hour or two (sometimes) if she is sleeping. I have a routine. Sorry to rattle on, but hope this helps. :D Shirl

Thanks for your help..yesterday was a bad day she was not weeing on the paper tried her outside and she was only waiting to come back in and getting soaked in the rain..today she actually pooped on the paper and seems to like a certain spot near the back door..yes she has the entire kitchen to herself ...we ahve a kitchen/diner and I have been leaving her there overnight andit really is not a big mess in the am..I think I walk downstairs expecting the worst !! left her in the crate yesterday an hr so she could try the wee outside and she weed her bed her blankie so what do I do with her on that ...!!??if she continues to wee on the paper by the door I would wait a couple months to do the crate but if she wees like yesterday spots and puddles I can't..

Melmel, How old is your yorkie now? I think if she is still young an hour or so is a bit too long in the crate. Maybe 15 minutes to a 1/2 hour tops right now, that way she won't wee on her bedding. I know its difficult and very time consuming, but if you take her out every 1/2 hour or 45 minutes, she will get in the routine to go outside. If she does wee on the newspaper, take that paper outside and put some rocks or something on each corner to hold it down. That way her scent will be out there and maybe she will go. I bought some stuff from the pet store, housetraining helper, that you put drops down where you want them to go and it worked. Precious's favorite spot was by the kitchen door as well! You sound like I felt weeks ago. It is very frustrating at times. Maybe you could gate off a section of your kitchen. I did that as well. That way she doesn't have the whole kitchen to wee and poo on when she doesn't decide to use the paper. Someone on here told me, wish I could remember there name, that if you put paper down at night, take it up and clean, then during the day take them outside. But others say that confuses them. I quit the paper once she started ripping it to shreds. Do a search on housetraining on here, you'll get lots of more info. Mine might not help, but hope it will. Shirl :D :D

You've been a great help..like my kids I take anyone giving advice and think on it !!!Well she is nearly 12 weeks so I thought an hr is fine...I must admit I was trying the night paper thingy and day outside but then with the rain she just stood there looking at me ...waiting ...she is a doll otherwise ..she chews her hide shoe and nothing else..she does not cry in the night ..she just sits and tilts her head at me ..I keep thinking I can't have the whole package that she is going to be a prob with the training..I hope not ...if you say that spray works I will go to the pet shop and get some ..I think the hardes thing is catching her weeing...she walks all over sniffing the house constantly (so you never know what she is doing)and today in a split second I turned to see her do it ..so I was able to take her to the paper....that is a challenge ...I will try her tomorrow for a 1/2 hr or less and see ..but when you let yours out at the beginning did you stand there actually watching her ?

Melmel,
Yes, from day one I have stayed outside with her and watched her. I still do. I found that taking her out on a lead she did better. Otherwise we spent lots of time just "investigating" the lawn. Thats fine, but not in the rain! :-) I also talk to her when going out, telling her to "go potty". You can pick a word you would like to use. Its harder than I thought it would be, housetraining, but you just have to keep at it. I have gotten alot of good advise from here and alot of encouragement from my friend Lynsey. :-) Good luck and email if you ever feel the need to. shirl :D

I don't believe a Yorkie can physically control themselves until they are 12+ weeks old. I know that Cairns cannot until about that age. I found my Yorkie to be even later in terms of real physical control over elimination. Most of the Yorkie breeders I knew who had experience with other breeds said Yorkies were more difficult to housebreak. Part of it was physical. Part of it is that they are just plain stubborn! Which, after all, is what makes them so enjoyable. :-)
Stacey

A three month old pup should be able to hold it for about 3 -4 hours, this is the age they start to get some control over their functions.
We decided to keep a pup anyhow, hubby is home till summer (can do some house training) and he is 14 weeks on thursday. He has free run of my house and uses the paper everytime, will train outside when the weather gets warm to cold and the snow. Sleeps in bed with us and sleeps through the night no accidents (9pm to 5 am I have to get up for work), the first night he woke me up at midnight. Have u tried keeping the kennel in ur room at night and keeping her locked in it, u will hear her when she has to go and then take her to the bathroom. Maybe she will sleep all night and no mess to clean in the morning.

Franc, The stuff I use for this is Pet Stain and Odor Remover by Four Paws. I got it at Pets At Home. I have seen other brands as well at other pet shops. This one is industrial strength, so it works real well. Good luck. Shirl :D

I never knew they were that stubborn..I always thought the Dachshunds rule that field! My dachshund would not budge if SHE did not feel to move it was like moving a donkey so I am used to it ! :) adds to their personallity.Well today she was in the living room all day and only made one puddle the rest she actually went to the kitchen to do..she seems to like to poop on the floor though..fingers crossed the last one a min ago was on the paper (well her feet were on the paper the bum was not all there...so funny)so I think we are getting somewhere ..once I don't have puddles all over the house with kids that is not good...

Glad your making progress Melmel. Takes time. As Lynsey said, they are stubborn. They seem to want to do things on "their" terms. :D shirl :D
