Can anyone tell me if say your the Hon secretary of a club running a open show (take entries etc) can you enter your own dog?

Each club has different opinions about this. Some allow, some don't. Some would not accept entries from any committee member so would be best to check with your club. I am show Sec for 2 societies, one allows it and the other one would prefer I didn't although there is no actual rule against it.

The Sec of our local show enters her own dogs, as we're so far north (Aberdeenshire) the entries might be a bit sparse if she didn't!

Commitee members of club shows I have attended are too busy on the day to enter their dogs too.

I personally dont think the secretary should enter at all, no matter how sparse the entry. They are the port of call for the judge & a judge should be 'safe'(perhaps not the correct word) to talk to the secretary. I recently judged & the secretary was entered & it didnt sit right with me to be honest.

Each club will deicide on this but I do not think the Secretary, Show Secretary or Show Manager should do so no matter what the rules as they should be available for contact throughout the show. The person appointing the judges should not but that is an ethical matter. Perhaps the committee can but officers should not.

I just dont think its fair that someone thats dealing with entries can then enter there own dogs once they no whos entered??

If you had ever handled the entries you would know that who has entered is the last thing you would notice.

Fact is working on a show committee is very time consuming hard work and on an open show level at least I do not think it fair to say they can't enter and it would only make it even more difficult to get members on the committee, well members who are happy to actually do something other than correct others.

Jackie, I was Show Manager for my breed club and knew most people who entered on a regular basis and if I didnt get an entry from someone who I would have expected to enter then I would ring them up to see if they had forgotten.... most of the time they had..... I never entered any of my dogs as the "club" didnt allow committee members to enter their own shows...Open and Champ!

This was just a one breed show so perhaps its different for someone taking the entries for a general Open Show :)

Think with a single breed show it is different particularly if it is your breed.

My main experience is with a group show and although you may notice a name as you enter the cheque into the paying in book you don't remember and even if you did you would not have really noted what classes were entered. Not that I have ever entered one of my own but had I  wanted to, what others had entered would not really have effected my decision, what would be the point? After all you enter under a judge for their opinion or just for a day out so who and what is also entered would not be of any interest at all.
