Hi everyone,
Last night my 5 month old puppy was mounting his bed and the sofa cushions continously. How should I deal with this when it happens again; last night I just distracted him with games? How common is this behaviour?
Thanks
Nicola

Are you planning on getting your dog fixed? If so, this will put an end to it right away! Our lab puppy started mounting right about that age, and we got him fixed when he was around six months. I don't think that you're supposed to scold them for doing it (it's instinct after all!), but distracting with toys is probably your best bet.

Hi Crazydog!
Yes I am getting him done at 6 months old - despite the protests from my boyfriend! Apparently it's a 'man thing' and I ' just wouldn't understand'!!!
Thanks for your help

Hello,
My lab puppy does the same but he's only 3 months. My vet told me when I inquired that it is part of play and there just showing the cushions who is boss.
I would worry if he mounted me though!

My boyfriend was not happy about it either until our pup mounted his leg -- it changed his mind pretty quickly!!

All puppies do it. Have you tried telling him "No!" and then distracting him?

It's all part of the growing up process, and dispite what you may have been told castration may not stop it but growing up will. What breed is the dog? Ja:)kie

My pup was also very active in the mounting dept. He never tried it on any objects other my arm.
I bought him a large red stuffed dog called Clifford from Argos and it worked a treat. Clifford is always on hand when Buddy gets in the mood and i can call my arms my own again.

Hi,just had to tell you of my Fox Terrier bitch Kizzy who also went through a phase of mounting things(not only dogs do it) and her favourite piece of equipment was Basil Brush, the one that had the string from its tummy saying things like "fox I'm not a fox, cheek! His nose did the job perfectly. Cheers Jane
