Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Less ties = more puppies ?

I read somewhere that the less ties the more puppies if the bitch was to get pregnant ? Surely this cant be right as I would have presumed it was the bitch that determined how many puppies she had by the number of eggs, as I would presume that like humans the male produces millions of sperms ? Am i right or just being thick ?

You're quite right; assuming normal fertility, the size of the litter is determined by the number of eggs the bitch releases and whether the mating/s are at the optimum day. One mating on the right day (which varies from bitch to bitch and season to season) will produce the maximum number of pups, but if it's too early or too late then it won't. That's why many people opt for repeated matings every two days for as long as the bitch will stand to ensure they catch the right day.

The dog releases millions of sperms each time, and those in the second or third matings will be 'fresher' and possibly more potent.

Thankyou for that I was sure that was the case but just wanted to verify.

Timing is more important in determining a pregnancy or litter size. From 2 very well timed matings (bitch ready and tied almost immediately) resulted in 17 puppies. My dog can only mate when bitch is ready and which has always resulted in a pregnancy and good sized litters his most recent from just the one tie 11.
