Just having a conversation and I said ginger baileys would be a great idea :D  Also what happened to fruit all sorts and chocolate covered pretzels.
Anybody else got anything they used to love and can't get anymore?  Or just something new that you would like to see on the shelves?
- By waggamama [gb] Date 26.06.12 15:25 UTC
I would love a portable hair dryer! I've found a couple but not from very reliable sources or in the UK. One that I can pick up in Boots for example so I can go to shows with it.
- By Roxylola [gb] Date 26.06.12 15:34 UTC
Ooh a battery one or better yet a wind up one, that would be a great idea.  I know you can get gas powered straighteners.

Bring back Spangles !!
- By gwen [gb] Date 26.06.12 20:22 UTC
Have unfortunate childhood memories of spangles, for some reason I never realised they were meant to be unwrapped form the pretty stripey paper, consequently I really, really did not enjoy them, and always tried to refuse when offered one, but when with  my Mother  she used to insist I accept - "to be polite" .  I think I was about 7 or 8 before I twigged what the problem was.

I miss "Snofruits"

Sold on the ice ceam vans when I was a kid.  They were triangle shaped lollies in Raspberry, Orange and Lime.  DEEEELISH!

Really tasted of the fruit they were supposed to be.  Made by Wall's when they used to be Wall's.  Before they were all the other things combined.
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 27.06.12 08:36 UTC
Bring back the secret chocolate bar. They were absolutely divine. My grandad used to walk me and the dog to the shop and buy me one as a treat when he babysat me. No idea why they were stopped.
- By gwen [gb] Date 27.06.12 09:12 UTC
Cheescake! Yes, I know you can buy cheescake all over, but the one I remember form being a kid was form a local store called Binns (taken over by House of Fraser and long since gone).   It was a baked cheescake on a very light pastry case.  Closes I have come to is New York cheescake when in the USA.  Have tried lots of recipes but can never get it - so bring back Binns' Cheescake!

Also, on a very different level - Bank Managers in your own bank, not at a call centre goodness only knows well.  (Sorry if I am having a bit of a Victor Meldrew moment)

oo, just thought of another one, although my partner thinks we have one of these :-) a self cleaning house!! Or clothes that dont need washing/ironing :-)
- By Celli [gb] Date 27.06.12 09:44 UTC
What is Sasperilla ? it's one of those things you hear mentioned but I haven't a clue what it is.

Gwen, are you from Edinburgh ? I dimly remember Binn's before it turned into H of F ....I have a nice Delia recipe for a baked banoffee cheesecake if your interested.

Spanish Gold's what I miss, you can still get it on line but it's a pale imitation of the original, and a decent Soor Ploom, modern ones are sadly lacking in the Soor element, the old ones used to " draw your erse up to your elbow " lol.
- By chelzeagirl [gb] Date 27.06.12 10:11 UTC
Sarsaparilla is a drink similar to modern root beer. Originally drunk as a medicinal tonic, its not the same anymore tho,, not as nice either,
sarsaparilla is still manufactured, but its taste is largely the result of artificial flavorings.

here a clip of the stall we use to get it from when i was a kid,, it was lovely stuff,, and even if you didnt like it,, your mum would still make you have a glass looool,, it was meant to have been good for you lol,, ohh those where the days,

Ah, mystery solved, it looked to have been very popular judging by the crowd.
Also made me notice and mourn the wearing of hats by little old ladies, just about every old dear used to sport head gear when i was wee, usually a turban inspired creation in pale blue, my own gran wore such a hat. I can't even remember seeing them for sale in shops, perhaps they were gifted to gran's at a secret ceremony upon the birth of their first grandchild, they may even have been colour coded, the more grandchildren you had the greater the " granny rank " culminating in purple for a Grand Master Granny.
- By cavlover Date 27.06.12 11:44 UTC
Spangles how I loved those! I loved texan bars too ... even remember the advert "A man's gotta chew what a man's gotta chew" lol.
Showing my age here....

Personally, I would love a robot to keep my entire house clean and tidy, that would be bliss!
- By Roxylola [gb] Date 27.06.12 11:55 UTC
You may be on to something there, I remember the hats but never the selling.

On the cheesecake thing, try hummingbird bakery recipes - they are a uk company who learned american baking in America, the only cheesecake I can stomach is their New York Cheesecake
- By gwen [gb] Date 27.06.12 13:01 UTC
Thanks for the Cheesckae recipe advice will have a look.

Celli, no not from Edinburgh - North East England. We had Binns department sotres in Newcastle, South Shields and Sunderland, but it is the Sunderlandone I was talking about.
- By Celli [gb] Date 27.06.12 13:21 UTC
I didn't know there were other Binn's !..here was me thinking they were an Edinburgh institution lol.
- By judgedredd [gb] Date 27.06.12 13:43 UTC
my OH said the chip van that used to come around when we where kids and sound his horn and everyone used to go out and get a bag of chips soaked in salt and vinegar and wrapped in proper newspaper so the print would come off on your hands when the vinegar soaked through.
- By Roxylola [gb] Date 27.06.12 14:25 UTC
We never had a chip van but we used to get chips wrapped in yesterdays newspaper with salt and vinegar on that you could actually taste!

Although as my family told me that the ice cream van was a bread van maybe there was a chip van lol
- By WolfieStruppi [gb] Date 27.06.12 14:37 UTC
We're lucky, still have a fish n chip van in the area twice a week.
- By judgedredd [gb] Date 27.06.12 17:09 UTC
you are so lucky bet they do not wrap in old paper though
- By cornishmals [gb] Date 28.06.12 06:21 UTC
our local chippy wraps their fish and chips in newspaper  - though has a layer of white paper first - hygeine rules I guess.
Loved Spangels - Lemonade, cola, orangeade, mint.Hated the old winter mix flavour.
I love Mint cracknall (made by mackintosh) but no one remembers it - even remember the jingle.
Moose - bit like milky way.
As for inventions - at the moment a self filling hole after the woos have finished digging.
- By lollypop [gb] Date 28.06.12 06:30 UTC
I remember and loved mint cracknall, what about aztec bars?
- By cornishmals [gb] Date 28.06.12 06:36 UTC
Oh you just reminded me - traffic light Lollypops lol.
- By flomo [gb] Date 28.06.12 07:43 UTC
Agree with the sarsparella ....dont taste the same now ....I remember that old guy in east street market .....he looked like he only had one tooth ....Happy days   :) :)
- By Hexie Date 28.06.12 08:13 UTC
Caramac...can you still get it?  Used to loooove that 'chocolate' bar as a kid!
- By LJS Date 28.06.12 08:18 UTC
Yes Caramac is still sold but had one recently and I think they have changed the recipe and didn't taste at all like I remember
- By Celli [gb] Date 28.06.12 09:02 UTC
Wigwams and beef Puffs
- By penfold [gb] Date 28.06.12 09:16 UTC
Oh, used to love Caramac.

Was at the highland show last week and they were giving out samples of Cremola foam!.....however, still don't like it lol.  Apparently they are bringing it out again.

Celli, I *think* I remember the Binns in Edinburgh, was it on the corner of Princes st., where Frasers is now?  The most nostalgic thing I remember from back then re Edinburgh was the overwhelming smell of Hops you used to get coming into Haymarket station...used to love that smell! (weird, I know!)

Personally I would love clothes that put themselves away again after being washed....
- By gwen [gb] Date 28.06.12 09:25 UTC

> Personally I would love clothes that put themselves away again after being washed....

Ooh yes please, and that got themselves ironed on the way!
- By luddingtonhall [eu] Date 28.06.12 13:49 UTC
Cleaning and ironing fairies.  They should definitely exist.
- By Celli [gb] Date 28.06.12 16:34 UTC
Yes that's exactly where Binn's was.
I did smile about the brewery smell, our school backed onto the brewery and every Monday morning the place reeked off hops.
- By furriefriends Date 29.06.12 21:37 UTC
cremola foam is still around but mail order. Caramac at least down south is available in sweet shops as always. Mum and I always loved jacobs puff cracknells with butter but they seem to have vanished :(
Just seen LJS and we arnt far from each other said about the caramac and I agree it does taste different or is that age ????
- By MsTemeraire Date 29.06.12 21:49 UTC
I noticed that one of the newer Werthers Originals varieties tastes just like Caramac but in a wrapped sweet form, same texture too.
