Anyone read or reading the 50 shades trilogy?
I'm still on the first one (Grey) and can't put it.
- By Chatsworth [gb] Date 24.06.12 20:00 UTC
I've downloaded it today on my kindle.....read about 6 pages so far.

- By suejaw Date 24.06.12 22:08 UTC
Heard so many erm, good things about it... Wonder if I should jump on get them too... Thought it was one book, gathering its 3?
- By japmum [gb] Date 24.06.12 22:43 UTC
My daughter has just bought this and I took a sneaky look at it and it made me blush!

felt as if it was some sort of sort of soft porn and that was just the first chapter.

Perhaps I've just lead a sheltered life

still reading Peter James' new novel Perfect People

That was good but it's not his new one -I just finished his latest Not Dead Yet a couple of weeks ago. :)

When I read the blurb on 50 Shades of Grey it didn't manage to sound very appealing -so is it worth bothering with? What's it about?
- By Tadsy Date 25.06.12 07:07 UTC

>> What's it about?

Sex.

It is Erotica, so don't expect Mills and Boon type stories. I hadn't heard of it until 2 weeks ago, and now it seems everyone is either reading, or has already read it.

I downloaded them onto my kindle, and did read all 3 quite quickly. I must admit you become quite desensitised to the saucy bits after a while.

I've just read Hostile Whitness (Rebecca Forster) which was either free, or hugely discounted (kindle again), and found that very enjoyable. (thriller/crime genre).
- By Lea Date 25.06.12 07:41 UTC
The name seems to come up so much on facebook statuses!!!!
I dont read much but this sounds entriguing the amount of people raving about it LOL
Lea :) :)
- By Tessies Tracey Date 25.06.12 07:53 UTC
I have to say I'm not in any rush to read it...
I know what it's about though - again from friends status updates on Facebook.

I read a very long excerpt online, and can't say I was impressed.

From the excerpt I read I felt it had poor grammar, repetitive prose and was just generally unappealing to me.

Harold Robbins wrote similar stuff years ago!
- By tashataylor [gb] Date 25.06.12 08:14 UTC
I have finished all 3 books and have to say im totally lost without Mr Grey in my life!!! Roll on the film!! haha!
- By arched [gb] Date 25.06.12 09:42 UTC
I downloaded it - to be honest I wish I hadn't bothered. Basically they meet, they have s*x, they argue, she leaves, they meet to discuss problems, they have s*x, they argue, she leaves, they meet to discuss problems, they have s*x, they argue, she leaves .........get the picture !.
Not a brilliantly written book and if people just want to read rude bits it would probably be cheaper to buy a porn mag !.

(am I right that you have to put * instead of e when you type s*x ?!. I thought I read somewhere that it can end up on other search engines if you don't !).
- By Multitask [gb] Date 25.06.12 09:59 UTC
So well put LOL.. I downloaded it and got to chapter three, very poorly writen so I deleted it.  Then I read about all they hype about it and thought for porn it probably was well writen LOL (not that I would actually know!)
- By Ells-Bells [gb] Date 25.06.12 12:32 UTC
Strange - I went to the launch of his latest book on 7th June in Brighton and Perfect People was also being launched by PanMacMillan at the same time!
- By Merlot [gb] Date 25.06.12 12:40 UTC
Roll on the film!!

Now that would have an 18 cert !! in fact it would only be available off the top shelf in a brown paper package !!!

- By cracar [gb] Date 25.06.12 21:32 UTC
I read the trilogy as everyone was talking about it.  I think they all just lead very sheltered lives!  The s*x(lol) is very repetitive as are the arguements, which is just like any relationship!  I guess a man wrote it even though it says a woman but there is no way a woman would've behaved like the 'heroine' in the story.  Not a chance!  Not a bad story but could've been done in one book.
- By Alfieshmalfie Date 25.06.12 21:50 UTC
There's an interesting story behind the 50 shades book.  It was originally written as 'fanfiction' based on Twilight, ie the author is a massive fan.  The orignal characters were Edward Cullen and Bella from the Twilight films and only published online in the beginning.  Because so many people were downloading the book, she changed the characters names and divided it into three and it was published.

However having read all three if I hear the words 'my inner goddess' again I think I will personally throttle her...and as for 'cupped my s*x' arrghghgh lol

How on earth are they going to make the film??!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 26.06.12 05:49 UTC
The more of this thread I read the more determined I am to avoid the book/s. They sound ghastly.
- By waggamama [gb] Date 26.06.12 07:27 UTC
Ditto that Jean. I'm not into Twilight or any vampire stuff so a book written from fan fiction of Twilight sort of repulses me! Instead I'm reading The Hound of the Baskervilles!
- By cracar [gb] Date 26.06.12 07:40 UTC
Oh, I didn't know that.
I'm a massive Twilight fan but you can see why a vampire is trying to keep a human safe from his kind.  It doesn't make sense in this story as they are both human, for him to be as over-bearing and controling.  I really struggled with that as my 'inner goddess' was screaming at me to shut the book and get something intelligent.lol.  What about the hissing breath? That not get you? Or Jeez? Is he 12?
- By Celli [gb] Date 26.06.12 09:26 UTC
I haven't read the book but this thread is giving me a right laugh :-)
It's even being discussed on The Wright Stuff lol.
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 26.06.12 11:06 UTC
I am halfway through the first book. Im really enjoying it. Its a typical 'girlie' book but i must admit its the first book i've read that is so s*xy. I've heard people describe it as mills and boon but even more erotic but never read mills and boon so dont know :-) My OH downloaded it for free on kindle. I would recomend giving it a go.
- By Mbro [gb] Date 26.06.12 11:32 UTC

LOL! Mills and Boon could only be described as erotic if a kiss sends you into spasms! They concentrate on Love; lust never used to dare rear its head!

LOL - I agree :) :) The more I hear that 'everyone' is reading/doing something, the more I think that I am not likely to like it :) :) :)

Mbro, did you see the SNL clip take the 'proverbial pee' out of it! What a laugh.  I loved the Ellen too.  See when she starts giggling cos she needs to make sex noises?OMG! soooo funny.

I went out a walk with my friend and we were discussing why this book is so popular.  Do you think the ladies of the world have such rubbish sex lives that this is new to them?
- By Mbro [gb] Date 26.06.12 12:01 UTC
LOL i only found this as i went online to see what everyone was talking about, every other status on facebook is "going to bed got a date with Mr Grey" or something similar, so i havent seen the snl clip, i will look for it now ;D
Do you think the ladies of the world have such rubbish sex lives that this is new to them?

Personally i'd rather have a cup of tea ;D

Or perhaps the ones who have the real thing don't need to read about it ... ;-)

And a pile of ironing!  :-)
- By flora2 [gb] Date 29.06.12 03:13 UTC
I've heard it described as mummy porn!

Its certainly very popular. I've just come back from holiday and couldn't believe how many women were reading it beside the pool!
- By arched [gb] Date 29.06.12 07:04 UTC
There are some wonderful reviews on amazon - many are hilarious, they make better reading than the book !. There are around 1200 on there but one of the first ones I read was on the first page by 'jelly1960'. She even notes that the ridiculous phrase 'my inner goddess' is used 65 times !.
- By Dill [gb] Date 06.07.12 01:10 UTC
Thank you all for discussing this and saving me from a fate worse than bad writing :-D

Thank you also for the reminder about Amazon reviews, very enlightening and reinforced my decision to never, ever read this, um, book?  I feel book is too strong a word really but in the sense that it has lots of pages and plenty of words, I suppose it must qualify

According to Sparklybeck, the words 'Holy crap' appear 230,493 times and the words 'Oh my' appear 1,435,500 times.  Now that's repetitive! :(

She must be REALLY grateful!! I have now decided not to bother either, so thanks all :)
- By Merlot [gb] Date 06.07.12 08:41 UTC
I have now read all three. Yes it is explicit, raunchy and not brilliantly written ...but...there is a story line that begs analizing, born to a crack head Mother, abused by her pimp, adopted by a good family, then prayed on by a female paedophile and groomed to be a dominant, meets innocent girl who (If you read all the books) teaches him that life can be better..
My English Lit surfacing, I like to look deeper into a book! LOL
Aileen
- By Carrington Date 06.07.12 08:54 UTC
:-D I shall be joining the gang of not bothering! I like a well written book and must admit that some of the crime novels I read (along with my horror) they make me cringe when they get to the lovemaking parts as they are just so cheesy.

I don't think anything can beat the book I read at 18 from a work colleague, wish I could remember who wrote it so long ago now, it was so explicit it definitely made me blush everything since is just childs play. I don't think these books would turn me all mushy as it seems to be doing to so many out there so won't bother.

It's quite funny that many of the female population are all swooning and panting for more, oh gosh we've all missed out, we should have written a steamy novel. :-D

Oh my!

I gave up trying to post as it wasn't working - now I find all these posts!!

Really sorry

But yes, I am THAT grateful ;)

Sounds ghastly - not for me thank you -  BUT I have really enjoyed reading the reviews on Amazon :)
- By Dogz Date 06.07.12 20:35 UTC
But I hate not being able to form my own opinion, I must at least have a go at reading this now!
My very own daughter read it and said I shouldn't read it as she thought it not appropriate for her mother!!

Hahaha!
I remember being a bit embarrassed about stuff like that when I was a young adult, and my parents saying "Do you think your generation invented sex??!!"
I have to say that made it even more embarrassing!

BTW, haven't read 50 Shades but stood in Smiths for a little while sampling it - a very little while. Then took my elderly mum in and said,
"What do you think of this then? It's the fastest selling book of all time.... "
"Hang on, let's put my glasses on... Oh. Hmmm.... Well, I don't read much any more... Hmmm. Isn't it time we went to Tescos? It's a bit warm in here."
