Topic Dog Boards / Showing / East of England Show

With all the problems encountered with the Blackpool show, as a newbie to showing I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the conditions are like at the E of E show. Is it undercover or outside on grass? It will be our first champ show and our first benched show, anything I should know? There has been another thread running re passes, I haven't received anything yet....

Thanks!

Well they are being moved this year so I can't tell you but the rings are in full span marquees and the benching will be under cover probably in the cattle sheds. Have never known the ground to be waterlogged and the car parks are either hard standing or if grass well drained - I would not worry we seem to have the drainage well worked out here in the fens so flooding is not at all common unless the North sea invades at the same time as on land storms and even then I would not expect Peterborough to be effected.

EDIT - re passes - mine came from the committee but the exhibitors will be sent by the printer and I don't expect they have been sent out as yet, would expect them some time next week.

will we be using the cattle sheds for benching as the agricultural show will be on at the same time will they not use the cattle sheds for their livestock ?
- By japmum [gb] Date 23.06.12 19:52 UTC
don't envisage that benching will be in the cattle sheds this year as the show is now returned to it's original format of being run alongside the county agricultural show.

I think that I read somewhere, but can't remember where, that the dog show will be held by the exec building and will use in/out tents.

As judging starts at 9am and the agricultural show will attract huge numbers of visitors I have booked accomodation nearby as I suspect the traffic will be an issue as there is only one entrance into the showground,so I would strongly advise that you give yourself plenty of time to get parked etc.

I will leave for the show at about 6.30 to 7am and I'm only traveling about 5 miles from the hotel!

You may be right I remember that before when it was shared with the Ag show we had cattle sheds so I thought we may be back to that site, but I don't know and it is not in the schedule.

Oh lord, we're two hours away and will already have to leave at about 6ish just to get there at 8am, so I suspect we'll be leaving even earlier... which means muggins here will have to get up at about 4am I expect to bath the dog! Long day, and also our first Ch show...
- By saintmarys [gb] Date 23.06.12 22:15 UTC
Bath the dog a day or two prior to show day takes the stress off of you and allows the coat to settle On show day a fine spray of water should suffice Enjoy your first champ show
- By waggamama [gb] Date 23.06.12 22:30 UTC
As much as I'd like to it just isn't possible, it's a very highly groomed breed, the coat would be a mess if I left it a day or two before showing, especially as she's raw fed. Can't imagine the judge enjoying the tripe smell, LOL.

> Can't imagine the judge enjoying the tripe smell

Does bathing your breed the day of the show affect the coat, i.e. make it softer than it should be? just curious here as it would be a disaster for some breeds to be bathed too close to a show.

Following a recommendation on here I bought some Cowboy Magic Green Spot Remover at a show recently, to be used as an all-round deodoriser. I have decanted some into a small pump-spray bottle to be kept in pocket case of fox poo etc, but so far have only used it to get rid of the bone-smell after a juicy marrowbone, which did work well.

Maybe something like that, or a good grooming spray, would be an option?

I'll go ahead and say my breed as this isn't a breeding thread; Miniature Schnauzer! I never bathe the jacket because water softens the coat, but you do use chalk to card the coat which keeps it clean. So I suppose no, it doesn't soften the coat, as yes it would be a disaster to have her coat softer in the ring (not that a bath has affected it so far when we have had to wash it; thankfully she has a decent jacket) and without the oils brought up to the skin it can make the coat feel softer or curl from the wet. However the furnishings need to be as light as possible for scissoring, so need to be as clean as possible, which means even a night's sleep can cause them to deflate somewhat.

Have heard great things about hte Cowboy spray, and will probably look into getting some for those emergencies! Until then though we'll be up with the birds to bath before driving to EOE, early night for me that night then!

with my spitz one of them bath at least 4 days before a show as his coat needs to settle the other one can bath 2 days before and it settles well so all depends on the dogs coat
- By Brainless [gb] Date 24.06.12 10:40 UTC
ditto with my spitz breed
- By Lisakom [gb] Date 24.06.12 13:28 UTC
takes my breed at least 3 days to dry and then another 3 days for the coat to settle....So I`m bathing at least a week before a show!...Oh how I wish they came in black lol
- By Brainless [gb] Date 24.06.12 13:55 UTC
You'll have to downsize if you want black,  lol
- By shivj [gb] Date 24.06.12 15:28 UTC
Wow 3 days to dry?! What do you do in rainy weather? Are they always damp? I was used to relatively hairy dogs when I had goldens but have forgotten now I live with short shiny coats!
- By Lisakom [gb] Date 24.06.12 18:36 UTC
Rain dries off them pretty quick with the help of micro fibre towels as bedding, its when they are soaked right through they take their time and if they dont dry quick enough they go mouldy and develop mildew which stinks!!!

And yes Barbara I would have to down size for a black one but I dont do little lol

Wagga, we bath the dogs the day before the show then just spritz down and blow dry the furnishings in the morning.... Being up in the northeast of scotland we always have 3+ hours travel for shows. Also on a breed specific note chalk holds better on a slightly dirty coat and iv always found that clean hair is too flimsy! Good luck with nogg at EOE!
- By japmum [gb] Date 24.06.12 19:30 UTC
Just looked at the EofE showground website and it states that the dog show is to be held in the exhibition hall which is adjacent to the cattle sheds and rings.

I am assuming that this is where the stakes classes and best in show etc was previously held.

There was no mention of tenting on the map so until passes arrive to confirm the layout it looks to me like the show will be held indoors.
- By waggamama [gb] Date 24.06.12 19:31 UTC
Thanks chick, I may just do that then, if I bath her late at night (we're leaving at 5ish) and then spritz maybe we'll be ok. I tend to put the kolestol and chalk in before we leave so it's had time to fall out so will do that and then reprep when we get there. Wish we could see you but I do understand it's a long way from Scotland!
- By Karen_schnauzer [gb] Date 24.06.12 21:07 UTC
That's what I would do :-) no one likes an early morning and I'm all about saving time... Over the years iv prepaired our dogs heaps of ways and this is by far the best for me! Were going down to leeds then possibly another champ show at the end of the year if I don't mate Lola again so may see you sometime.... Still waiting for my puppy!!
- By Nova Date 24.06.12 21:31 UTC
Just looked at the map on the web site and it shows the building as a dog show and a marquee next to it that says judging marquee so it looks as if there will be benching in the building and I guess some rings and then others will be in the marquee. At least it is still adjacent to the facilities and not out in the fields so that is good.
- By suejaw Date 24.06.12 22:23 UTC
They do come in Black Lisa, after they have been at a muddy show!! lol... Tangle was getting there at Southern Counties ;-)
- By waggamama [gb] Date 25.06.12 08:02 UTC
I'll give it a go then, will try it on Thursday too as we have an early Open show! Thanks!
Leeds is too far for me, we'll be at Brum or Richmond if we don't qualify at EOE though. Hope Lola takes and you get your pup!!

- By judgedredd [gb] Date 25.06.12 15:37 UTC
the email addy i had for them is not the correct one so i got sent a new one so hopefully someone will be able to sort it out for me
- By malibu Date 25.06.12 16:17 UTC
Emailed them over weekend was advised today that the last bunch were posted today so should be with us shortly.

I wish fosse data would catch on the idea like dog.biz have as I have my NWPB passes today and that's a week after EofE, downloading yourself is so much simpler
- By Brainless [gb] Date 25.06.12 17:16 UTC

Not if you don't have a printer, a friend now has stopped entering on-lien as she doesn't have a printer.
- By waggamama [gb] Date 25.06.12 17:21 UTC
I'll cross my fingers then, thanks Malibu.
