Hiya, as the title says, how long do bitches bleed for after whelping a litter, there were no complications as far as I'm aware during the birth.

I have had them go on on and off for up to about 10 weeks, but usually but the time they stop feeding it has stopped.

It varies as it does for women.

My toy breed, where bitches do tend to suckle longer than the larger breeds, often still have a slight discharge at 10-11 weeks.  It is normally totally without any odour, and nothing to worry about.

It really does depend on the bitch.  Calida who had a recent litter at nearly 4 years of age hardly lost any and what she did it was only for around the first week.  I have had others that lose it for quite some time and quite heavily.  As JeanSW says if there's no odour to it I really wouldn't worry too much.

It depends on how many pups as the higher the number the more placental beds to heal over, provided there is no nasty smells then she is fine.

Some bitches keep themselves cleaner than others, again a large litter means she has less time to herself and she may be feeding all the time making the uterus contract constantly which pushes out any excess blood and debris.

As others have said, it can depend. Some don't bleed after whelping, others bleed a bit for ages. However, a cautionary tale. Last year my bitch whelped with no problems at all. The following day I took her temp and it was slightly up, on checking with the vet by phone, he was happy it was within the ok range for post-whelping. The day after she was still bleeding (I hasten to add it wasn't pouring out of her, but an amount I was unhappy with) ... rang vet again, he was still adamant that the level of blood loss was ok and temp ok. Breeder friend/mentor turned up that day & felt blood loss was ok (she's had bitches bleed for weeks). The following day I took her to the vet as still not happy. The following week she was having emergency surgery - I was very lucky to bring my girl home alive.

So whilst some blood loss might be ok and dependant upon the individual, the amount of blood loss is also dependant upon the individual bitch ... for my girl it was actually a small amount, to most it would be nothing great at all. However, for her it was sufficient for it to cause a life threatening situation. If it's a situation you currently have, I'd say if in doubt a quick trip to the vet is cheaper than the surgery we went through and spares an awful lot of heart ache.

I just wanted to say  thanks for all the advice on here...I did cut her hair and have been showering her...She is eating and drinking lots...Baby's are soo cute..Just bragging...
