Topic Dog Boards / General / Booster bath?
- By Goldmali Date 19.06.12 22:24 UTC
My back can't take bathing 9 toydogs in the bath week in and week out, I need the dogs higher up so I don't have to bend so much. Has anyone used one of these booster baths and can explain to me how on earth they work?

I don't get what you are meant to do -surely the water will just pour out of the missing side? I was considering a simple baby bath on a stand but if there is anything made FOR dogs that works well, I'd prefer it.

I have one of these!  (edited to add, although I think mine is slightly larger and therefore possibly higher?).

It's fantastic & very easy to use.
You don't use it / fill it like you would a conventional bath, you use a shower attachment from a nearby water source (I've rigged mine up to attach to my laundry room taps).
The open in end is so that a ramp can be attached if needed.  It's also the end where the plug hole is so that the water can drain away via a hose.

I have to say it's very sturdy too, I've used it to bath a friends rather well loved Lab and it stands up to that :)

HTH!

Had the large version and found it completely useless.
For toy dogs, I have a £2 from a car boot sale baby bath with holes drilled in the bottom at one end.  By raising the other end with rubber gripper stuff from £1 shop, the water drains straight into the sink - the plug hole is never right at the end.  I've attached cable ties to be able to thread a lead to restrain.  I stand it on the draining board and use a rubber shower spray - again £1 shop - to the taps.

Takes up little room in the garage to store, is simple, cheap, safe, no mess and no bending! :)

Ok, silly question but what happens to the water from the shower? is there a system to catch it or does it just spill out of the open end? does it have to be used outside or stood in a bath or something?

There is a plughole with hose attached underneath at the open end.  The open end still has a lip of about 3 inches deep so no water escapes.  The water doesn't have the chance to build up to fill the bath (if that makes sense).
The water just drains away constantly as the bath is slightly sloped so that the water drains away down the plug.
I've used mine inside & outside (though mostly outside due to having such warm weather here).

Not at all - each to their own. :)

It was too big for my kitchen so I put it in the conservatory but have only cold water in there and had to run an extended shower hose thingy from the kitchen sink, which was very cumbersome.  I'm not happy bathing dogs in cold water unless it's very hot outside. :)  I then had to run a very long waste hose into the garden that then flooded that patio because there isn't a drain near enough.  So long hose bringing the water in and long hose taking the water away - I tripped a couple of times!
I found it difficult to lift a medium sized dog over the sides to put it in and out and even more difficult to put it in the open end - I couldn't see anything in front of me once I had the dog in my arms!  Once set up with dog in, the bath was the wrong height for me - 5'2"!
Although it's quite light, I found it very awkward to move from the garage to the conservatory for occassional use and it took up far too much room to leave it in thee all the time and a lot of room in the garage too!

I used it twice and then passed it on to another home where it was permanently set up for regular use. :)

Thanks everyone -plenty to think about then! In my case it would be the smallest version for toydogs only so no issues at all about lifting etc, and I'd keep it permanently in the bathroom.

This might sound silly but what about those baby changing tables that have the built in bath? I had a plastic one with metal poles that could come apart.  It had shelves underneath great for storage and once finished in the bath, you can close the top down and have a ready-to-go grooming table! And it's vinyl so easy to wipe down.  I remember thinking that I would've loved it for little dogs but mine are too big.

Why can't you bath the toy dogs in the kitchen sink, thats what I use till they become too long in the body to fit.

I also have a large black oblong tub I bought on Ebay which can be stood in the bath or outside and filled from the right water source and water gets tipped out to allow for rinsing etc.

Aah WestCoast, I can see why that would be a nuisance :)

I guess that's why I'm happy with my set up, as I do have the luxury of hot & cold water supply (I've fixed up my own version of the 'mixer' tap attachment too) and the bath is close to a drain.  Neither of the hoses I use are longer than 1.5 metres max.

I have the larger version of this. Think of it more as a raised shower tray than a bath. It needs to be near a drain to put the drain tube in and near a shower to supply the water to wash the dog with. It is not a bath in the sense of filling a bath and putting a dog in water to soak (like a human has a bath).
Mine also has fixing and came with a collar so the dog is held securely whilst showering them (so they can't jump out and injure themselves).

Because the water pressure there is so terrible you cannot use a shower attachment on the tap. (All you get is a dribble of nearly cold water once an attachment is added.) Did it in my old house but impossible here. The alternative is paying a plumber to fit a new tap complete with shower which would be okay but would work out more expensive. Also the Cavalier and the biggest cats would not fit as easily as the Papillons, hence thinking booster bath would be easier. (The kitchen sink with new taps was plan A until I spotted the booster baths. :) )

Thanks -all that would work fine for me.

I have one of these on my kitchen mixer tap, it comes with various fittings to fit any type of tap

http://www.lakeland.co.uk/search/tap-adapter/q02.r16.1

It allows me to point the shower in any direction and there is no seperation of hot and cold you can get with some mixer taps.

Here is the one I mentioned above
