Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Rabies vaccination

I'm emigrating at the beginning of 2013 to Australia, and as such my bitch coming with me needs her rabies vaccination and then to be titre tested 4 weeks afterwards. I need to get this done basically as soon as I can but likely to be mid-August, so that 180 days have passed by the time she goes into quarantine at the other side so that she only has to go in for 30 days.
The problem I'm facing is that she's due to be mated for her second litter at the end of August, but possibly later than that as her season was late after her litter so not sure if she'll come in 6 months from when her season should have been, or six months from her last season. Either way, what I'd like to know is, will having her rabies vaccinated before she's mated affect the litter at all? It's the Nobivac vaccination so the same one she has each year (well, the nurse murmured nobivac to herself on the phone, so I'm assuming it's the same one), though she won't have the lepto with it as this can make the test turn positive, and either way she's not due again for boosters until January.

Would appreciate any advice given, talking to my vet (also a breeder) today about it as I'm also worried the herpes jab will affect the titre test too!

Forgot to add; the obvious answer here would be not to breed her, unfortunately she's on a breeding contract to my mother so not much I can do about that. We're planning to leave at the end of March if all goes to plan, so she will be recovered by then, and if not we will delay until she is.

If you get her vaccinated now there is no reason for there to be any issue other than the pups may have high levels of maternal immunity to Rabies so should not be vaccinated for Rabies themselves early, but that is the reason Rabies vaccine is licensed to be used on pups over three months anyway to avoid it not taking.

Re the lepto, yes when I exported a puppy to Australia the pup was not given lept vaccine as one of the diseases they blood titre test for is lepto, and it would give a positive.  For Australia the dogs need to have  a titre test for Brucellosis (which we don't have in UK) and leshmaniasis and a couple of other things.  The timings are quite crucial and it is best to have copies of the protocol to make sure the vets get it right.  The people I use for shipping have a checklist for the vets to make sure they get all timings etc right.

Thanks, yes spoke to the vet today and he said that as long as she's vaccinated at least two weeks before she's in season she should be okay. He's going to see which vac is best for pregnancy and give her that one, as there are three apparently.

Yes the timings are pretty important, the whole thing is fairly complicated and it's taken me months to get my head around it all! Oh well, she's worth it. Just emailed the checklist to my vet at his request and yes, the shipping company will sort out the paper work and make sure it's all there for a fee so worth doing I think.

Oh waggamama, I feel for you!
It was complicated enough 3 years ago (the rabies vacc / RNATT titre test required then), taking two dogs and having a pet export company / (useless!!) vet to assist!

I think you're right to just go with the plans for mating that you already have in place, and see what happens from there.

A friend was taking her 4 dogs with her, and the test for the lepto came back positive on one of the dogs, she had to wait another 2 weeks before re-testing.  Although two weeks doesn't seem like a huge amount of time, when it comes to immigrating, it can make a world of difference.

When you're trying to sell a house, pack up a whole household for the shipping company & try and stay sane, it can throw ALL your timings right out of the window!

Best of luck with it all :)
Which Quarantine station will you be using?  My two were at Eastern Creek (Sydney).

Haha yes, it does make for some stressful moments, we're happy to wait until she's passed and ready. Eastern Creek too, we're emigrating to Gold Coast so will fly her out to Sydney two weeks before us and then stay with my brother in Sydney before taking her back up to QLD. Hopefully it'll go without a hitch!!

Ooooh!!!  That's where I am!!  You'll have to give me a holler when you're in and settled :)
If I can do anything to help further down the load, please ask :)

Bless you that would be lovely, it's really kind of you to offer, will probably appreciate a natter about England when I'm feeling homesick!

You're more than welcome :)

And that should have said down the road, not load! lol

We've been here 3 years exactly, I don't think that the homesickness ever really goes away completely (for some people anyway), but it gets easier :)
